Dragon Quest 12 has restarted development from scratch, shifting its creative direction and receiving a brand new subtitle.
- Development Reset and Subtitle Change: Dragon Quest 12 development restarted from scratch with a new subtitle, changing from The Flames of Fate to Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams.
- Creative Direction Shift: The game is moving away from its originally planned dark atmosphere toward a brighter, dream-focused concept aimed at a broader audience.
- Preserved Work and Spin-offs: The contributions of late character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama remain intact, while Square Enix also announced Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch 2.
The recent 40th anniversary broadcast for the Dragon Quest series gave fans a long-awaited look at what’s next for the franchise with Square Enix sharing updates across multiple projects including new ports, spin-offs, and the news on Dragon Quest 12. After years of very little information following its original reveal in 2021, the next mainline entry finally resurfaced with major changes including a new title, a refreshed direction, and confirmation that development had restarted from scratch.
Dragon Quest 12: A Fresh Vision and a Complete Reset
The journey of the Dragon Quest series has now reached another milestone as it crosses over its 40th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, Dragon Quest XII Executive Producer Yosuke Saito and series creator Yuji Horii shared new details on the long-awaited project during the anniversary broadcast.
According to Saito, the game ran into several obstacles during development that eventually led the team to reshuffle staff and restart development entirely. He explained that the decision was made to ensure “the next Dragon Quest game will be one that all of you fans of the series will really love.”
Alongside the restart, the game also received a new subtitle. Originally announced as Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, the project has now been renamed Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams. The reveal also included a new logo, fresh footage, and a different creative direction from what was first shown back in 2021.
While the original reveal leaned into a darker atmosphere, the new direction centers around mysterious dreams and visions experienced by the protagonist during sleep. Horii described the updated approach as one that leads toward a brighter and more exciting future, while also helping the game appeal to a broader audience.
Even with development being reset, some key elements of the original project remain untouched. The work created by late Dragon Quest character designer Akira Toriyama and longtime composer Koichi Sugiyama will still be fully preserved in the final game.
Of course, restarting development also means the game is going to take longer. Square Enix did not provide a release window but it’s safe to assume that it will be a while before we see anything substantial again.
Other Dragon Quest Announcements From the Anniversary Broadcast
Dragon Quest 12 was not the only project featured during the anniversary presentation. Square Enix also revealed Dragon Quest Monsters The Withered World, a new entry in the spin-off monster-catching series. The game is currently planned for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, though no release date has been announced yet.
Another update confirmed that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition will also be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24. Unfortunately, there is no upgrade path available.
