Why Did Don’t Starve Together Hit a New Player Record?

The recent player surge is primarily due to a 90% discount during the Klei Fest 2026 anniversary sale, driving the game’s price to under €2. This aggressive pricing strategy, combined with the release of the “Cursed Confrontation Part 1″ update, successfully attracted both new and returning players.

Klei Entertainment is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a studio, and to mark the occasion, they have heavily discounted their hit survival game. By offering Don’t Starve Together for around $1.50—which intrinsically includes a second copy to gift to a friend—the barrier to entry has essentially vanished.

According to SteamDB, the concurrent player count peaked at 122,662 users. This smashes the previous record set in 2023, proving that the multiplayer transition of the original solo survival experience remains highly relevant.

Ten years is a lifetime in the gaming industry, yet Klei’s co-op survival title shows no signs of slowing down. The game’s hand-drawn aesthetic has aged flawlessly, while continuous content drops have transformed it into a deep, systems-heavy experience.

Unlike many modern survival games that quickly pivot into creative sandboxes, the core loop here remains strictly about survival. Players must constantly manage hunger, sanity, and the elements while exploring an unforgiving world.

The developer has also maintained a steady stream of structural updates. The transition from a solo game to a fully-fledged cooperative experience is widely considered the catalyst for its enduring success.

What’s New in the Cursed Confrontation Update?

The “From Beyond – Cursed Confrontation Part 1” update introduces a new boss encounter and exclusive loot drops located within the Sanctum. It also adds new navigation tools like the Waymark Compass and survival items such as Thermal Balm to assist players in challenging areas.

Klei Fest 2026 brings more than just heavy discounts. The event also marks the conclusion of the game’s current interactive lore story arc. Players logging in during the event receive a commemorative “Thank You Box” containing exclusive cosmetic items.

The studio is already working on the second part of the Cursed Confrontation update to complete the “From Beyond” narrative. Alongside ongoing PC development, a mobile port of Don’t Starve Together is officially scheduled for release on July 21st.
