The relative success of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty has reignited enthusiasm not only from the CD Projekt Red team but also from fans of the futuristic open world based on Mike Pondsmith’s IP. Project Orion, that’s the codename for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, of which we have some news thanks to an interview with the Game Director.
The announcement of this sequel was made on 4th October 2022, with a tweet from CDPR. Indeed, starting from 2022, a dedicated team was established based in Boston, and this new team will begin relocating this year. Game Director Gabe Amatangelo, who assumed this role for Cyberpunk in 2021, speaks about the situation.
It seems that Amatangelo wants to create a new team using American talents to more authentically reflect the Cyberpunk world experience. It’s worth noting that Amatangelo worked on Phantom Liberty, a deep and necessary expansion that addressed many of the base game’s launch issues. Indeed, this expansion greatly helped to restore both the IP’s name and CDPR’s reputation after the initial impact.
The decision to create a dedicated studio in Boston is to avoid internal competition within CDPR, among various teams of the different projects. By moving further away from Warsaw and utilizing talents overseas. The new Boston studio already boasts many new members with solid resumes. If Amatangelo himself worked on Star Wars: The Old Republic and the expansions of Dragon Age Inquisition, we have a lineup of veterans from Blizzard, Respawn, and Amazon Games. We have the new executive producer Dan Hernberg behind New World, Apex Legends, and Diablo III, as well as Alexander Freed, who worked as a narrative designer for BioWare, Obsidian, and DICE, with probably new additions throughout the year.
In the same interview, Amatangelo confirms his dedication to creating a sequel based on the foundations established with Phantom Liberty and expanding on them, thus aiming for a flawless launch. Although the main focus of the Boston team will be on the new project, he does not deny the possibility of some content arriving for Cyberpunk 2077 as happened in December and then January with version 2.1 and 2.11.
