While the AI will soon find you too much to handle, even at higher difficulties, the online component is where the specials really shine. The strategy of choosing when to slot your attacks in becomes paramount. It’s easy to lose the rhythm of the song if you get too cocky. As long as the game can nurture and maintain a player base there should be ample reason to keep coming back to God of Rock time and time again.

While fighting games and rhythm based games have a lot of points in common, which is the catchy and really well realized soundtracks, precise rhythmic based combos and such, it’s not often that a new attempt at mixing both is realized. This is the attempt from the indie studio of Modus Studios, with their debut title God of Rock.
A rhythm based fighting game, where the God of Rock has gathered the most famous and talented souls of music artist in a fighting tournament for the greatest fame. With a rather modest cast of 12 unique characters, each with their own fighting style and abilities to boot, on top of 40 unique songs and 4 games mode with the classic Story Mode, with branching paths where each character will try to achieve their dreams, a Training Mode, to perfect and master songs, a Track Editor to customize the notes of the songs, and the Multiplayer mode with local, to play with friends, an a Ranked mode to try climbing to the top of the leaderboard!
Gameplay wise, it will happen with 3d models with 2d sprites during the story, showcasing a comic like style of visuals. During the match, a classic 1v1, there will be a health bar on the top and an horizontal rhythm string on the bottom, with the two characters in the centre of the screen.
During the fight the objective is not only to correctly execute the notes, which also fills up the meter bar, but also unleash attacks during downtime in order to hit opponent’s health bar. With certain tresholds of the bar we’ll be able to execute special moves and abilities. All the while the notes will start falling faster and faster.
While on paper this seems good, on hand the experience is a bit of a mess, with the player needing to keep an eye both at the bottom, at the top and at the center, with a pretty annoying type of rhythm as an horizontal sheet, as opposed to the more common vertical, especially considering that the extreme side of the screen are unused and just display the background. On top of that more often than not, trying to attack an enemy will result in being penalized, as you may miss a note, thus ending the combo, which will soon add things to worse the longer the game goes. And as the game goes for long, the music will obviously loop itself out making longer matches frustrating than enjoyable.
While having this kind of issue, the title itself is not a horrible one, especially for a debut game. That being said id definitely fail to appeal to the fighting community, while it could satisfy rhythm game fans looking for a different experience. Hopefulyl the team will keep up with the game, releasing new content and polishing things out, as of now I’d say to wait a bit more, especially for the price to come down a bit more.
God of Rock 2D fighting and rhythm game. The game will have story mode and also competitive multiplayer with over 40 original songs and 12 unique characters to master. The core gameplay is close to Guitar Hero and the likes where players must hit the correct buttons in rythm in order for their character to attack or parry depending on the enemies action. Characters have special abilities that can speed up enemies tracks or add more notes to them for example. A cool concept that adds another layer of competitiveness and flair to normal rhythm games.
