Ubisoft just swung the axe on six major projects, but the industry’s most famous ghost project refuses to die. Despite a massive internal restructuring and the cancellation of the Prince of Persia remake, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still officially in development.
The news comes as a shock to fans who expected the 17-year-old project to be the first on the chopping block. Instead, Ubisoft is doubling down on its most expensive gamble to date.
Ubisoft Axes 6 Projects—But BG&E2 Survives the Purge
The “cyclone” hitting Ubisoft Montpellier has claimed several victims, including the long-troubled Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake. While the publisher is trimming the fat, they’ve confirmed that Jade and Pey’j aren’t going anywhere yet.
Insider Gaming reports that the project survived the latest round of cuts. Ubisoft is currently re-evaluating its entire portfolio, yet BGE2 remains protected under a new management strategy designed to save its sinking flagships.

BGE2 Costs: 17 Years and $500 Million
The development stats for this game are bordering on the absurd. Since its 2008 reveal, the title has spent over 6,400 days in production, costing Ubisoft an estimated $500 million without a single frame of public gameplay in years.
To stop the bleeding, Ubisoft moved the team into a “Creative House” dedicated to immersive narratives. This specialized unit now handles BGE2 alongside Rayman and Might & Magic, hoping to finally turn a decade of burnout into a shippable product.
Ubisoft has spent too much to quit now. With over half a billion dollars sunk into the project, they are trapped in a “sunk cost” loop, betting that a massive launch can eventually recoup the deficit.
Beyond Good & Evil 2: Can Ubisoft Actually Ship It?
Logic says a game in “development hell” for 17 years can never meet the hype. However, the decision to shield BGE2 while killing established remakes suggests there is a functional, impressive build behind closed doors that the public hasn’t seen.
For smart shoppers, the move is clear: don’t pre-order and don’t hold your breath. If you need a fix of this universe, wait for massive discounts on the 20th Anniversary Edition rather than betting on a sequel that has outlived two console generations.
After nearly 20 years of waiting, is there any world where Beyond Good & Evil 2 actually justifies its $500 million price tag?
