Battlefield may return to yearly releases as EA eyes a 5–6 year plan with three studios, sparking debate ahead of Battlefield 6’s launch.
The final beta weekend for Battlefield 6 just wrapped up, and now the countdown to release is officially on. Excitement around the franchise is at its highest in years, with fans dissecting every leak and rumor especially since the series is once again going head to head with Call of Duty. Unlike Activision’s though, Battlefield hasn’t followed a yearly cycle for quite some time. The last release was Battlefield 2042 in 2021, and before that Battlefield V in 2018. But after the overwhelmingly positive response to the beta, EA may be planning to change course and bring the series back to annual releases.
Battlefield Rumored To Aim For Annual Release
Industry analyst Michael Pachter recently claimed that Battlefield’s GM is laying out a plan to make the franchise yearly again, though it won’t happen overnight. According to him, it would take five to six years to build up the infrastructure, with three separate studios handling the games on a rotating three-year schedule stating, “Their goal is three studios making Battlefield on a three-year basis, so they can get to Battlefield annually.”
The idea has split the community. Some fans fear that yearly releases could water down the franchise and repeat the mistakes that plagued Battlefield 2042. Others, however, are eager to see the return of the iconic rivalry with Call of Duty that defined a decade of shooters. From 2009 through 2018, the two series traded blows almost every year:
- 2009/2010 – Battlefield: Bad Company 2 vs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- 2010 – Medal of Honor vs Call of Duty: Black Ops
- 2011 – Battlefield 3 vs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- 2012 – Medal of Honor: Warfighter vs Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
- 2013 – Battlefield 4 vs Call of Duty: Ghosts
- 2014/2015 – Battlefield Hardline vs Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
- 2015 – Star Wars Battlefront vs Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
- 2016 – Battlefield 1 vs Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
- 2017 – Star Wars Battlefront 2 vs Call of Duty: WWII
- 2018 – Battlefield V vs Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
After that, the franchise took a long pause, only returning in 2021 with Battlefield 2042, a troubled launch that left fans disappointed. Now, with Battlefield 6 building momentum and hype, EA seems eager to reestablish Battlefield as a consistent competitor to Call of Duty.
Of course, skepticism is high. The rumor stems from Michael Pachter, an analyst who recently had to retract comments about Fairgames being canceled, leading many fans to dismiss his Battlefield claim outright. Still, if EA is serious about the plan, we could see the annual model start to take shape in the next five to six years.

For now, fans are focused on Battlefield 6, but the possibility of Battlefield reclaiming its annual rivalry with Call of Duty has reignited debates across the community. Whether it’s excitement or concern, one thing is clear: Battlefield is back in the spotlight.
