Last night, the 20th BAFTA Games Award took place. These British Academy Video Game Awards were hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and presented by comedian Phil Wang.

The BAFTA Games Award has been held for 20 years now. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts hosts this event every year, celebrating the best game of the year and much more. There were a total of 18 categories including: Animation, Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Best Game, British Game, Debut Game, Evolving Game, Family, Game Beyond Entertainment, Game Design, Multiplayer, Music, Narrative, New Intellectual Property, Performer in a Leading Role, Performer in a Supporting Role, Technical Achievement, EE Player’ Choice. The winner in the Best Animation category is the rhythm-fighting game Hi-Fi Rush. In this game, you live in a cyberpunk-like world with an MP3 player implanted in your chest. But since this doesn’t conform to the norms of the world, you are pursued by many and must defend yourself on your journey. And all this is best done to the rhythm of the music to make stronger attacks and combos.
The awards for both Artistic Achievement & Audio Achievement go to the same game, Alan Wake 2. This game offers a lot both artistically and in terms of sound. Investigate ritual murders in a small town and experience many supernatural phenomena.
The best game of the year 2023 at the BAFTA 2024 is, as expected, Baldur’s Gate 3, which broke many records last year and has also won many other awards. But that’s not the only award Baldur’s Gate 3 has won. With its great soundtrack, this game also received the award for best music in video games. But the contributors to this work have also done an incredible job, and this is recognized at the BAFTA Games Award. Andrew Wincott won the award for best supporting character in a video game. He voices Raphael in Baldur’s Gate 3.
As the BAFTA Game Awards are a British prize, there’s also a category dedicated to British games. The game Viewfinder won, where you solve puzzles through perspective thinking. This game offers a lot of fun and really stimulates thinking. That’s why it’s not only the best British game, but it also won another award for the best game with new intellectual property rights. Since this game had a completely new idea by using a camera, which was fantastic.
The game that won the debut game of the year is Venba. In this game, you play as an Indian mother who moved to Canada with her family in the 1980s. Cook recipes from your homeland and discover new ones. Additionally, you get a heartwarming story about family, love, and loss.
The game that won the award for the best evolving game is Cyberpunk 2077. This game started with many bugs at its release in 2020, but it has been continuously developed and improved. Especially last year, the big 2.0 update came out, which significantly improved the game, along with the Phantom Liberty DLC, introducing a completely new story and a new part of the city into the game.
According to BAFTA, the best game to play with your family or in online multiplayer this year is Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This Mario Jump’n Run game can be played locally with up to 4 people from a couch or online with up to 4 people. The game that won the award for the game beyond entertainment is Tchia. In this game, you play as the protagonist Tchia, trying to free your father from the tyrant Meavora. It’s an open-world game where you can do almost anything. You can sail with your boat, climb, glide, and much more. All of this in a beautiful world. Additionally, you master the ability of soul jumping, allowing you to jump into the souls of animals or objects and control them. Explore this beautiful world and save your father.
The game that won the award for the best game design according to BAFTA is Dave the Diver. In this game, you dive into the depths of the ocean during the day to catch materials and fish. However, many exciting surprises and RPG elements await you. Some fish will fight back, and you have to combat them. After spending the day underwater, you open your sushi restaurant at night, where you sell the fish you caught to get better equipment.
Next up is the best lead performer. The best lead actor this year was Nadji Jeter, who lent his voice to Miles Morales in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Lastly, let’s talk about the game with the biggest technical achievement. This year, it’s definitely The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The developers achieved a technical masterpiece with this game. Thanks to immense optimization efforts, this game runs smoothly on the now 7-year-old Nintendo Switch. And all of this without loading screens. This wouldn’t be possible without the incredibly good optimizations from the developers. But thanks to them, we can enjoy the game at a constant 30 FPS.
