And like with many successful projects, there’s always looking ahead to what’s next. Well, the future is bright but as to who is leading it? It’s as confusing as today’s world politics.
Shifting Gears on the Bond Franchise Future Games
If I were to write this article yesterday, it would have been in a different direction.
IO Interactive, the studio behind Hitman, developed 007 First Light for seven years then self-published it with great success. It did 3M sales in the first two weeks and received high praises from critics that many gamers are suggesting we have a GOTY contender with this one. While the game is a standalone project, IO Interactive designed it too with the goal of a trilogy. However, when Amazon bought the rights to the IP, that kind of faded to oblivion.
Fast forward to last week, Amazon Games GM Jeff Gattis did an interview with Polygon where he shared that future games will be, and I quote, “done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.” That seems pretty clear. He then continued to share how good their relationship is with IO Interactive.
However, since then, Amazon received some backlash from fans. It probably wouldn’t have been that bad if the game wasn’t that much of a success. But then you also have the fact that Amazon Games has had a very interesting past couple of years with multiple game shutdowns. Plus, the idea that they’re supposed to be scaling back on gaming but then secured the Bond IP is confusing and worrying at the same time.
Then came yesterday. Speaking with IGN, Gattis attempted to clarify his earlier comments. “I did not confirm that Amazon Game Studios is publishing the next one. Did not say that. So unfortunately, it got picked up, and once it runs, it runs. No, IO’s been great. They’ve been great partners. In fact, I was over there visiting them in Copenhagen a couple of months ago. The game’s doing great. Let’s let the game breathe and have its day.”
That statement certainly changes the conversation but it doesn’t necessarily provide answers.
Since Amazon fully owns the rights to the IP, it doesn’t quite add up that Amazon Game Studio will not be publishing it. But developing is a different story and maybe IO Interactive is still in the drawing room, just with them this time.
At this point, who’s who and what’s what is not clear. What we can take away from this though is there’s probably going to be a sequel as Gattis also shared, “Seems like a sequel should be made.”
