Amazon Abandons Open-World Racer From Forza Devs
Amazon Game Studios has officially pulled out as publisher of an upcoming open-world driving game by UK-based Maverick Games, a studio led by former Forza developers.
Maverick Games, a UK developer formed in 2022 by former Forza Horizon devs, has officially lost Amazon as its publisher as the company continues to scale back its development and publishing projects.
Reported by The Game Business, an Amazon Game Studios spokesperson said that the decision “allows Maverick Games the flexibility to find a publishing partner whose strategic priorities are better aligned with bringing their game to market.”

According to internal memos and industry reports, the company is pivoting toward a hybrid model, favoring its Luna cloud platform and AI-driven casual experiences over the grueling multi-year cycles of AAA development.
In a statement to The Game Business, the rep explained: “As part of our strategic evolution to focus on projects that leverage Amazon’s unique strengths and scale, including the recent re-launch of Luna and our Tomb Raider franchise partnership with Crystal Dynamics, we have decided to release Maverick Games from their publishing agreement with Amazon Game Studios.”
From Creators to Middlemen: The Maverick Breakup
This shift marks a total transformation in Amazon’s identity. They are no longer interested in paying the “Standard store cost” to bring prestige AAA titles to market, even when the talent is proven.
By dropping the Maverick Games project, Amazon is signaling that it no longer wants to be the “middleman” for high-risk, high-budget blockbusters. Instead, the company is retreating into a more insulated ecosystem.
