Alan Wake 3: Remedy Teases Possible Release Window

From a recent Press Release by Remedy Entertainment, we not only have a clear picture of Remedy’s success during the 2023 period but also regarding Alan Wake 2. It is CEO Tero Virtala who speaks about the future of the franchise in this very press release.

Alan Wake 3: From the success of Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 has been a highly anticipated title with a certainly complicated history. Starting from the release of the first Alan Wake in 2010, the Remedy team had already begun working on the sequel, which was hinted at by changes in the storyline, with a teaser for Alan Wake: Return within Quantum Break in 2016. Although the first Alan Wake was very well received, according to Sam Lake, the title was not a financial success, which led to the development of the sequel requiring more time.

Alan Wake 2 is certainly one of the most interesting titles of late 2023, and along with some big titles, it dominated the market during the holiday season. What Alan Wake 2 offered was a more refined and detailed product, the result of Remedy’s maturation, particularly thanks to Control, which Alan Wake shares much in common with, even on a narrative level. Like the first game, Alan Wake 2 received great feedback, despite there being quite a few valid points of criticism.

The Potential for Alan Wake 3 and the Future for Remedy

CEO Tero Virtala discusses how although Alan Wake 2 won several awards and was the fastest-selling title of Remedy, it was not a financial success, selling approximately 1.2 million copies in total. It’s worth mentioning that the cause can primarily be attributed to perhaps overly close ties with Epic Games, which, on PC, saw the game as an exclusive. On consoles, however, there was no physical copy, which many saw as a sign of lack of confidence in Alan Wake 2.

On the other hand, Remedy has managed to acquire full rights to Control, and Virtala himself discusses how thanks to direct control of the two franchises and a now well-known name, the upcoming sequels of the respective titles will have a more regular cadence. This means that we won’t have to wait over 10 years for an Alan Wake 3, especially considering how the ending of Alan Wake 2 left a strong space and need for a closer sequel.
