Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 4 Delayed to December

The grim darkness of the far future is going to have to wait a little bit longer as Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 4 is no longer releasing next month as initially planned. In a recent update video, game director Jan Theysen announced that instead of launching on September 17, the game is now scheduled to release on December 3, 2026.

That’s just under three months later than originally planned which is a fairly significant delay considering Dawn of War 4 already appeared to be in pretty good shape based on review playtests. Still, Theysen says the team needs more time to get “more of your feedback into the game, to fix bugs, improve performance, and polish the experience.”

While that is without a doubt a good reason to delay because, well, who wants an unfinished or botchy game, one cannot help but think that maybe the decision was also partly influenced by game release schedules. September, especially when exactly Dawn of War 4 was plotted, is a very busy week. Then you also have GTA 6 in November where many publishers have already steered clear. With a new December release date, there is more chance that the dust has settled and the game can get the attention it deserves.

As the launch date was moved to December 3, Commander Edition owners will now receive advanced access on November 30. The domino effect also reaches the Year 1 expansion with Crusade mode and map one now releasing early 2027. The first DLC, Blood Ravens, is targeting a Spring release, although that can still change. The same goes for Dawn of War Aftermath which is currently intended to launch sometime before Summer.

Waiting another three months isn’t ideal especially for anyone who was already planning to spend September playing Dawn of War 4. But with the Fall packed with major releases, those three months could pass pretty quickly. More importantly, the game is still on track to launch in 2026 and a December release could make it a great strategy game to settle into over the holiday period.
