Shifting from Tactical Strategy to Real-Time Action
Square Enix is taking its acclaimed HD-2D visual style in a fresh direction. Following the success of turn-based titles like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, the studio is embracing real-time action to reach a broader audience.
Players control Elliot directly, executing timed attacks, dodges, and blocks. This marks a significant departure from the studio’s recent multi-protagonist RPGs, shifting the narrative weight entirely onto a single main character.
To accommodate the fast-paced combat, the development team implemented a hybrid camera system. The perspective remains fixed overhead near the player for readability, while distant scenery uses a dramatic tilted angle to showcase the environment.
How Does the Character Progression System Work?
Instead of traditional level-ups, character progression relies entirely on a magicite forging system and weapon mastery. Players collect elemental magic stones throughout the world and forge them into upgrades, attaching specific gameplay effects to Elliot’s arsenal of seven distinct weapon types.
The seven available weapons—Sword, Hammer, Chain, Bow, Bombs, Spear, and Boomerang—are designed to avoid overlapping roles. For example, the boomerang features a charged midair spin attack, while the chain excels at reeling in enemies.
By removing standard experience points, the developers aim to make the game more accessible while maintaining continuous, customizable growth. Players can create highly specific builds tailored to their preferred combat style.
The Return of Local Co-Op and The Mana Series Influence
The team explicitly cited the Game Boy and Super Famicom iterations of the Seiken Densetsu series as major inspirations. This influence is most apparent in the game’s companion system and cooperative mechanics.
Elliot is joined by Faie, a fairy who can be controlled independently via the right analog stick or by a second player in local co-op. This dual-control setup mirrors classic multiplayer action RPGs from the 1990s.
Faie provides crucial support abilities, including high-speed dashes and teleportation. These skills allow players to dodge attacks and instantly counterattack, adding a technical layer to the combat for those who master the timing.
The narrative spans four different eras within the single region of the Kingdom of Huther. As players map the harsh wilderness outside the kingdom’s magical barrier, they will actively shape the continent’s history.
