Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirms NFL 2K and MLB 2K are officially shelved, ending hopes for a simulation football revival.
- Projects Shelved: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that both the NFL 2K and MLB 2K projects are currently shelved and not in active development.
- Creative & Financial Hurdles: The NFL project was halted due to creative challenges, while MLB 2K remains sidelined because of a small, unprofitable market.
- Future Outlook: While the CEO remains “open-minded” about NFL 2K in the future, there is no timeline for a return, leaving Madden NFL without its primary competitor.
For years, fans have been waiting to see NFL 2K make a proper return. Ever since Take-Two announced its partnership with the NFL back in 2020, many hoped the long-dormant football franchise would finally step back onto the field and offer some competition to Madden NFL. After a long period of silence, there’s finally an update on the project, unfortunately, it’s not the news fans were hoping for.
Take-Two Shuts Down Hopes for NFL 2K and MLB 2K Revival
The NFL 2K series last released a mainline game in 2004 before disappearing following EA’s exclusive simulation rights agreement with the NFL which effectively handed the football sim market entirely to Madden NFL. That changed in 2020 when Take-Two announced a new multi-game partnership with the NFL instantly sparking excitement among football fans and longtime 2K players.
At the time, expectations were high. Even though the agreement only allowed Take-Two to create non-simulation football games, many still looked forward to seeing how the publisher would approach the franchise in an arcade-style format. The original plan reportedly targeted a 2021 release window.

But six years after that announcement, the situation has now taken a disappointing turn. In an interview with Game File, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the NFL 2K project has been shelved. According to Zelnick, “Some of the stuff we tried to do didn’t work out creatively.”
The silence surrounding the project over the past few years had already raised concerns among fans especially as no gameplay, trailers, or major updates ever surfaced. While Take-Two never released a full console or PC football title under the partnership, the company did experiment with the franchise in the mobile market through NFL 2K Playmakers in 2024. Unfortunately, the mobile title struggled to find an audience and was eventually shut down.
Despite the setback, Zelnick didn’t completely close the door on NFL 2K. During the interview, he explained that the company remains open-minded about revisiting the series in the future “if an opportunity presents itself.” So while the current project may be shelved, the franchise itself hasn’t been permanently ruled out.
The update also extended to another dormant sports series, MLB 2K. The baseball franchise quietly disappeared after MLB 2K13 and fans have occasionally wondered if the company would ever consider reviving it. Unfortunately, the outlook is far less optimistic.
Zelnick revealed that MLB 2K is also shelved but unlike NFL 2K, he suggested the chances of bringing it back are much lower. According to him, the baseball market was simply too small for the company to sustain profitably, and Take-Two had already lost significant money on the series before ending it.
For now, both franchises remain inactive, leaving Madden NFL and MLB The Show without much competition in their respective sports gaming spaces.
