Sonic the Hedgehog turns 35 in 2026, and SEGA is not wasting any time. The publisher just dropped a nostalgia-fueled trailer to initiate a year-long celebration of the Blue Blur.

Since 1991, Sonic has raced through pixelated loops and open-world frontiers. Now, SEGA plans to honor that legacy with a massive lineup of events, merchandise, and digital content.

A Year of Blue Blur Celebrations

SEGA officially confirmed the roadmap for the 35th anniversary. The festivities begin with a “rewind” trailer that highlights the franchise’s evolution over three decades. But that is just the start.

Marcella Churchill, VP of Brand Marketing at SEGA of America, emphasized that this milestone looks toward the future as much as the past. The goal is bringing the global community together.

Fans can expect a narrative podcast, live concert tours, and exclusive museum pop-ups throughout 2026. Retail partnerships will also bring limited-edition collectibles to shelves worldwide.

New Sonic Titles on the Horizon?

While the anniversary announcement focuses heavily on events and culture, gamers are asking the obvious question: Where is the next mainline game?

SEGA has not explicitly confirmed a sequel to 2022’s Sonic Frontiers yet. However, the publisher rarely lets a milestone year pass without software.

Recent releases like Sonic x Shadow Generations and mobile titles like Sonic Rumble keep the engine running. With Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Nintendo Switch 2 confirmed port and more projects are already circulating in the wild.

If you haven’t played the recent hits, now is the best time to catch up before the next big reveal drops.

Verdict: Is the Sonic Anniversary Hype Real?

SEGA knows how to throw a party. The 30th anniversary gave us major announcements, and 35 promises to be even louder.

The mix of multimedia projects—from podcasts to concerts—shows SEGA treats Sonic as a pop-culture icon, not just a game character. We expect a major game reveal before the year ends.

Which classic Sonic game defines the series for you, and what do you want to see announced this year?
