Nintendo has just deployed update 1.4.0 for Mario Kart World, finally bringing a minimum of customization options to a blockbuster that sorely lacked them.

We’ve detailed the full list right below, but if you want the headline feature, here it is: it is now possible to change the music volume during races, so it’s no longer drowned out by a deluge of diesel clatter and exasperating “wahoos“. Audiophiles rejoice.

Customization and Improvements: The Full Patch 1.4.0 List

Since everything needs a bit of justification in this world, know that Mario Kart World has become the symbol of a strange love/hate relationship with its players.

On one hand, the care put into the game is obvious, with an intoxicating soundtrack and art direction to die for. But at the same time, we had to deal with dull-as-dishwater intermissions between main tracks and a rather overwhelming lack of options in the settings.

Luckily, these are exactly the two main issues the developers are aiming to fix today. This is one of the beefiest updates for the game since its release last June:

  • The selection of items appearing in “Vs Race”, “Balloon Battle”, “Coin Runners”, “Room”, “Online Play” and “Wireless Play” modes can now be modified
  • Music titles and their original games now appear in the pause menu
  • Music volume can be adjusted in the settings
  • Players gathered in a “Room” can join “Race”, “Knockout Tour”, and “Battle” modes
  • You can join friends playing “Knockout Tour” from the “Friends” menu in 2-player mode, and “Online Play”
  • An option to restart or skip a race is available in the pause menu for “Vs Race” and “Single Player” modes
  • Photo Mode can be selected during ghost races in “Time Trial” mode
  • And most importantly: 8 segments starting from or leading to the “Koopa Troopa Beach” course have been reworked to be less linear

The Koopa Troopa Beach Rework

It is clearly on this point that Nintendo really gave it their all. We’ll let you admire an example of a reworked intermission below, and we have to admit it’s devilishly less sleep-inducing than the grim straight lines of before.

Better yet: the “Koopa Troopa Beach” circuit will now have two laps to complete instead of just one. Aside from that, the title also shows a desire to become more dynamic overall. For example, food bags will respawn faster, as will coins placed on the water. And riding over the Manta Ray’s back will now result in a speed boost.

A Step Towards Redemption? The Future of Mario Kart World

Of course, this patch also fixes a list of bugs as long as your arm, which we will spare you here.

So, let’s be serious for a minute—it’s not certain that these changes are enough to elevate Mario Kart World to the pantheon of racing games. That said, they confirm that Nintendo is aware of its game’s issues and intends to offer the redemption it deserves. We’re crossing our fingers that this patch signals the start of a new series of structural improvements.
