Horizon Steel Frontiers: Sony and NCSoft Announce New MMO
Sony and NCSoft have announced a new collaboration to expand the Horizon universe with Horizon Steel Frontiers, a brand-new MMO that will launch for PC and mobile. Crucially, it won’t be available on the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
Guerilla Games officially revealed Horizon Steel Frontiers last night in an announcement video, with Sony and NCSoft partnering to expand the massively successful PlayStation franchise to the MMO genre.
Described as a “fierce survival adventure,” the massively multiplayer online role-playing game will launch simultaneously for PC and mobile devices. The developers have confirmed it won’t release for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
Horizon Steel Frontiers: The Cross-Platform Release That Avoids PS5
Controversially, while the franchise began on the PlayStation 4 in 2017 with Horizon Zero Dawn, the upcoming Horizon Steel Frontiers will not launch for the PS5. Instead, avoiding a console release in favor of PC and mobile.
What it does do is allow Sony to expand further into the live-service space with a proven partner in NCSoft, a developer renowned in the MMO and live-service space, dating back to its first game, Lineage, which launched in 1998.
Gameplay Speculation: What to Expect from the Steel Frontiers World
Given the IP and NCSoft’s previous MMOs, players can expect a deeply complex character progression system, vast open-world exploration, and tech-based combat against familiar and all-new machines.
The developer has already revealed players can look forward to “large-scale raids with an advanced combat system,” meaning players can finally hunt machines together in a persistent, shared world.
The Future of the Horizon Franchise: Beyond Steel Frontiers
Sony is aggressively expanding the franchise, with Horizon Steel Frontiers, the IP’s first MMO. The game comes with fans already looking forward to a live-action Horizon Zero Dawn film due in 2027.
Last year, the series also celebrated the release of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered on PC and consoles, signifying Sony’s long-term commitment to the franchise and its fans.
