In 2026, the next Resident Evil movie is set to be released. The director is Zach Cregger, who also produced Barbarian and Weapons. This film is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.

All Resident Evil Franchise and cinema fans know this is not the franchise’s first movie. In 2021, “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” was released, but the new film will be a reboot of the series and is not connected to the gamesor any previous movie.
Completely New Story Instead of a Game Adaptation
The new movie from Zach Cregger is not based on any specific game and will also not feature well-known main characters like Leon S. Kennedy. He said: “I’m not going to take Leon and put him into an original story. That would be presumptuous. I respect the games too much and prefer to tell a Resident Evil story within canon that keeps what fans love intact.”
The film is intended to run parallel to the events of the games and expand the universe. It will introduce new characters and much more. Cregger has repeatedly emphasized that he deeply respects the source material and wants fans to retain the familiar elements.
Tone & Style Inspired by the Games
Cregger has personally played the Resident Evil games for many hours but has never watched the previous movies. This will allow him to bring a fresh perspective to the project. He is drawing inspiration mainly from Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 and is planning an even larger and more ambitious film than Weapons. Fans can expect mystery, shifting perspectives, and nonlinear storytelling.
Script, Production & Cast
The script is being written by Zach Cregger in collaboration with Shay Hatten. The movie is expected to be produced by Sony / Constantin Film. Filming is scheduled to begin in October 2025 in Prague, Czech Republic. Not much is known yet about the cast. Confirmed actors include Austin Abrams (Weapons) and Paul Walter Hauser (Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Naked Gun).
Release Date & Outlook
The new Resident Evil movie will premiere on September 18, 2026 in theaters. This will be an independent project within the franchise and therefore appealing to both horror fans and Resident Evil veterans. The first teasers or trailers are expected by late 2025 or 2026.
