When and Why Steel Hunters Is Shutting Down

The official shutdown date for Steel Hunters is October 8, 2025, which is three months from now, allowing everyone to play the free-to-play shooter one last time.

In its announcement, Wargaming said: “Today we share difficult news: we’ve made the decision to sunset Steel Hunters. You’ve given us so much passion and support, but unfortunately, we’ve come to the conclusion that continuing development is not sustainable. We know this isn’t the news anyone wanted to hear, and we genuinely share in your disappointment.”

What Players Can Expect Until Shutdown

While the game is closing in October, Wargaming is offering players some incentives to play Steel Hunters before its too late by unlocking all Hunters for everyone and adding a custom games mode so players can set up matches and “create some final memories together.”

Towards the end, Wargaming is planning a farewell tournament, which it says will “celebrate” the amazing community. The studio will share more details on its Discord soon.

The Legacy of Steel Hunters

Steel Hunters found a place within the niche mech genre, setting itself up as a PvPvE extraction shooter where six teams of duos fought for resources and survival. Unfortunately, its plans to add additional maps, modes, and progression systems won’t come to fruition.

The game only managed to attract a peak concurrent player count of 4,479 on its first day in Early Access. Now the game is winding down, expect more people to try it while they can. So, if you want to see what it was all about, now is your last chance.
