Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution was the second chapter developed for WayForward’s famous lost chapter that was supposed to release in 2003 on the GBA as a sequel to the first Shantae. With the big surprise from the team who announced in 2023 the return to development.

The second chapter follows the adventures of Shantae, the half-genie protagonist of the famous series. A 2D platformer with a strong metroidvania style. Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution – Launch Window and Platforms Confirmed

The WayForward team brings exciting new news about the Shantae series. A popular platformer and metroidvania game series returning with the lost chapter for GBA. Titled Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution, which the team announced was in development for Summer 2023, with an initial launch set for 2024.

With the team confirming a launch date of May 8, 2025 for the game, set to release in Summer 2025. Along with a new gameplay trailer confirming the arrival on Xbox, covering all major platforms like PC, Nintendo Switch, and Playstation. Offering an enhanced version of the limited edition on GBA set to release in April 2025.

 

Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution – Game Story

Risky Revolution is certainly one of the most interesting chapters in the series’ history. A series that in the last decade has seen great success. With the first rare chapter released on Game Boy Color considered one of the best platformers on the GBC. Risky Revolution was developed as the second chapter for GBA and was supposed to launch in 2003.

However, development was cancelled due to a lack of a Publisher for Wayforward. But to everyone’s surprise, on July 12, 2023, the team announced they had resumed development. With a modern physical launch on GBA expected for 2024 in collaboration with Limited Run Games. Then announcing a delay until 2025. But with the fantastic news of an enhanced port for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4. And now also on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

 

Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution – Main Features

The Wayforward team decided to use the famous Carbon Engine from Limited Run for the modern port. With an enhanced version offering the following:

  • Improved Graphics: A port offering modern screen resolutions, plus a modern interface and sprites aligned with the latest chapters.
  • Lost Adventure: The adventure of the lost chapter of the young half-genie Shantae, who must foil the new crazy plan of the pirate Risky Boots.
  • Gameplay: With a metroidvania-style gameplay, where we’ll use Shantae’s transformative abilities and hair-whipping skills. Featuring a new Front Yard and Back Yard mechanic to move terrain and create new paths.
  • Battle Mode: For the first time in the franchise, we’ll have a 4-Player multiplayer mode
