About FATAL FRAME: Maiden of Black Water

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Blackwater is an adventure horror game developed by Koei Tecmo Game Studio, their fifth entry in the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series. This port will come with a few modernization improvements, like widescreen resolution support and updated visuals. Maiden of Blackwater takes place in the Infamous Mt. Hikami, once a place of great religious importance, now it lies abandoned and has become the site of many unfortunate accidents and disappearances. Play as three protagonists who are mysteriously connected, as each of them enters the cursed mountain for their own reasons.

• Camera Obscura: Your main weapon and utility against the evil that lurks in the mountain, it’s capable of repelling and sealing vengeful ghosts; it can also detect and reveal other things and items that are not visible to the human eye.
• The game is divided into three missions, each led by a different protagonist: Yuri Kozukata, Ren Hojo, and Miu Hinasaki. Each of them has the ability called shadow reading, which allows them to see the memories of people who have been consumed by the mountain.
• Post-Game content – play as a new character, Ayane, a ninja of the Kunoichi clan. She is unable to use the Camera Obscura, but with her ninja training, she can avoid most ghosts in the night.

Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water is so deeply Japanese that you’ll come away from it learning a bit about the wonderful horror storytelling tradition that the culture has. While some might find themselves at odds with a game that is so steadfastly traditional about how a horror game should play (especially on the back of the very modern Resident Evil: Village this year), if you go in with an open mind, understanding the cultural context that has lead to the game turning out this way, then you’re going to find it to be a really remarkable and enlightening bit of art. It’s not unlike going to an art gallery for a yurei exhibition, really.
