Xbox Demo Initiative ‘Project Moorcroft’ Officially Cancelled

Xbox’s Project Moorcroft, a demo initiative for Game Pass, is cancelled and replaced by ID@Xbox Demo Festivals for indie game exposure

Microsoft’s long-gestating Xbox demo initiative, known as Project Moorcroft, has officially been cancelled, four years after it was first announced. The project was meant to bring playable demos to Xbox Game Pass, giving indie developers more exposure while letting subscribers try upcoming games early.

But despite the promise, Moorcroft never left any real footprint on Game Pass. It quietly lingered in the background, and now it’s being shut down without ever becoming a visible part of the platform it was supposed to enhance.

Xbox Cancelled Project Moorcroft for ID@Xbox Demo Festivals

When Microsoft first introduced Project Moorcroft back in 2022, the vision was simple, bring game demos directly to Xbox Game Pass. This will give subscribers early access to upcoming titles while helping smaller studios gain exposure and feedback.

It was positioned as a discovery tool, something that could bridge the gap between developers and players in a subscription-first ecosystem. But like a number of Microsoft initiatives over the years, Moorcroft never quite materialized into a full-fledged feature and has now been shelved.

That said, this isn’t a clean-cut cancellation in the traditional sense. Instead, the idea behind Moorcroft has evolved. Microsoft still wants to support demos and indie discoverability, but it’s shifting that effort into a different format, the ID@Xbox Demo Festivals.

This came up in an interview of Global Director Guy Richards with The Game Business where he explained that Moorcroft’s original concept didn’t quite align with how players engage with demos today. Rather than embedding demos into a subscription service, the company is leaning into time-limited, event-style showcases through its ID@Xbox program.

And honestly, it makes sense. The new approach feels closer to Steam Next Fest which has proven to be a strong model for generating attention around upcoming games. By concentrating demos into a focused event window, you create urgency, visibility, and conversation.

Players are more likely to explore, share impressions, and most importantly, wishlist games. That last part matters a lot. Wishlists translate into potential sales, something that doesn’t always happen when a demo is simply bundled into a subscription like Xbox Game Pass. If a game is expected to land on Game Pass, many players skip wishlisting altogether, which can hurt long-term performance for developers outside the subscription window.
