War Thunder’s Nuclear Escalation is back on the dev server today — but Gaijin just rewrote the rules of how nukes drop.
War Thunder is a long-running free-to-play PC war game, and Gaijin has just opened an 8 June 2026 dev-server test of Nuclear Escalation, detailed on the official War Thunder site and paired with the official Nuclear Thunder trailer. The useful question is not price today; it is whether this bigger battlefield can pull players back into the live war.
The updated Nuclear Escalation test pushes War Thunder back into large-scale combined arms combat. Gaijin says all in-game nations can now participate, Battle Ratings run from 13.0 to 14.7, and the mode now uses bracketed matchmaking inside that range.
The important shift is scale. The front line extends toward the mountains, carrier strike groups control the coast, AI ground forces become more modern at higher ranks, and the win condition moves away from instant base destruction toward broader target scoring.
What Gaijin is testing this time
The core news is simple: Nuclear Escalation is back on the Heavy Cavalry dev server, but it is being reshaped rather than merely rerun. The official devblog says the April version has been refined with more playable nations, a wider front and an AI-controlled fleet added to the mission.
Coastal pressure is the key addition here — it forces players to defend a flank the old version ignored. By adding coastal pressure, wider contact lines and more targets, Gaijin is testing whether the mode can feel like a full battlefield instead of a dramatic ending animation.
Why the battlefield gets bigger
The most visible change is the front line. Gaijin says the line of contact now reaches the mountains, increasing tactical depth and giving aircraft, ground vehicles and fleet pressure more room to matter. That is the right direction for a mode built around escalation.
It also connects with the broader Heavy Cavalry update, where Gaijin separately detailed ground location reworks and arresting gear. The shared theme is clearer battlefield flow, less dead space and more reasons to think about positioning before rushing the next target.
The nuclear strike rules are less blunt
The updated mode removes the need for strategic bombers with megaton bombs. Nuclear strikes now use 5 and 30 kiloton bombs carried by aircraft that already handle nuclear bombs in Ground Battles, with the exact setup depending on the Battle Rating bracket.
The rule change should make escalation feel more connected to regular War Thunder systems. Instead of waiting for giant bombers to end the match, players have to read airfields, targets, respawns and aircraft availability in a more familiar combat loop.
What PC players should watch now
The test is not just about bigger explosions. Gaijin has changed respawns, minimap tooltips, target markers and air defense behavior, including filters that make air defense systems less likely to waste shots on guided missiles when aircraft are the real threat.
If the mode lands well on live servers, War Thunder could get a stronger large-scale event format for players who want air, ground and naval pressure in one place. Because the base game is free-to-play, this update is better framed as a reason to jump back in and test the chaos than as a shopping decision.
