Following Valve’s surprising triple announcement, we’ve got new details from the official team through various interviews, including a statement that pegs the Steam Machine’s hardware as equal to or better than 70% of Steam users’ PCs. But is that really true?
The recent announcement from Valve definitely shocked the entire web, officially unveiling not just the new Steam Frame and Controller, but also the return of the Steam Machine in a new form. This time, it’s rocking unified hardware in a smaller format, powered by the much-hyped SteamOS. It’s ready to bring Linux and Steam into the homes of tons of passionate gamers.

The Return of the Steam Machine: Small but Mighty
A comeback nearly 10 years after Valve’s first announcement and failed experiment to bring Linux and a real Gaming experience to PC users’ homes. The new Steam Machine (SM) is riding the huge success of the Steam Deck, which debuted in February 2022. That was followed by the OLED revision in late 2023, bringing a highly-matured Linux-based OS with SteamOS.
The reveal happened on November 12, 2025, with a triple announcement accompanied by the reveal of the new Steam Controller (based on the Steam Deck’s layout) and the new Steam Frame VR Headset. But most of the general attention was on what fans are jokingly calling the “GabeCube.” It’s packing some impressive hardware for a small, imperfect cube of about 15cm.

Steam Machine: The Statement on Expectations
Following the official reveal, we also got a slew of videos and info from various outlets, courtesy of Valve. They were invited shortly before the reveal for a “hands-on” with the new Steam Hardware trio. This was all in collaboration with some of the minds behind the development and design of the 3 solutions. They explained, in particular, the heart powering each peripheral, with a special focus on the SM.
In the video from Adam Savage, in particular, we got a statement from Yazan Aldehayyat, one of the Hardware Engineers behind the SM. He claimed that we’re looking at hardware equal to or better than 70% of gamers’ PCs. Data that, as many noted, would line up with the Steam Hardware Survey. The October 2025 edition specifically shows:
- CPU: 6 Physical Core Processor, assumed with HT/SMT (28.69%)
- RAM: 16GB (41.49%)
- GPU: RTX 3060 ( 4.30%)
What We Know About the Steam Machine’s Hardware
An extremely ambitious statement from Valve. It positions the SM not as a console but as an HTPC or non-primary PC, mainly depending on the price, which is still TBD. However, it’s getting a lot of critical eyes and doubt from the community. Many are side-eyeing the 8GB of VRAM in the GPU solution for the quoted “60fps 4K with FSR.”
The community, analyzing the data unveiled by Valve, has already found some matches on the CPU and GPU side with the hardware powering the Steam Machine. We’re talking a 30w Zen 4 Processor that’s likely a Mobile SKU, equivalent to a Ryzen 5 7640U with a 100mhz lower boost. On the GPU side, word is it’s an RX 7600M 8GB with a slightly higher max boost, thanks in part to a 110w tdp versus the latter’s 90w.
In Conclusion: A New Way to Experience Gaming?
Components that many feel are not quite up to snuff in 2025, especially the mere 8GB of VRAM. Although Linux, unlike Windows, is able to use this limit more optimally. The final word, of course, will be the final price. Many are hoping for a price under at least 800€. This could lead to a new way to play, bringing many users closer to Linux and, consequently, to Steam.
