The Steam Next Fest is currently taking place. During this event, developers showcase their new games—titles that are not yet fully completed and, most importantly, have not been released yet. As a result, there are plenty of free demos available, allowing you to try out new games at no cost.

Games from various genres are included. Today, the focus is on the Top 4 Horror Games of Steam Next Fest. I’ll introduce them to you quickly so you can try them out for free on Steam. The Steam Next Fest runs until March 3rd, so make sure to test everything beforehand, as many demos will disappear afterward. If you’re craving more horror games, check out the Top Horror Games of 2024 here.
Stygian: Outer Gods
The first game we’re discussing today is Stygian: Outer Gods. This is a survival horror game with RPG elements. Stygian: Outer Gods is set in the universe of “Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones” and serves as a prequel to the first game. You will experience the events of the “Black Day” and even have the ability to influence them.
You play as a former anthropologist and soldier who was honorably discharged after suffering serious injuries. However, the protagonist is plagued by nightmares and guilt over his father’s disappearance. When he receives an invitation for an expedition to the mysterious city of Kingsport, he can’t refuse, as his father was also interested in the city. Now, you embark on a journey to Kingsport to uncover its secrets and possibly learn more about your father’s fate.
In the game, you can explore the dark streets of Kingsport. Many elements are inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Kingsport features various locations where you must solve puzzles or engage in combat. However, ammunition is scarce and enemies are quite strong, so you must decide whether to engage in fights or sneak past enemies. You can also customize your character’s skills and abilities to match your playstyle.
A Hole In My Room
The second game I want to introduce is A Hole in My Room. This is a first-person psychological horror game. You play as James, who wakes up in a colorless room with a mysterious hole in the ceiling, without any recollection of how he got there. To escape, you must uncover the secrets of this place.
You explore dark environments, solve puzzles, and interact with objects to progress. Along the way, you will find many locked doors that need to be opened. However, as you might have guessed, you are not alone. You are being watched and followed by a dark presence. You cannot fight back, so your only option is to hide and observe.
RailGods of Hysterra
Next up is RailGods of Hysterra. This game is a cooperative survival action RPG that you can play alone or in online co-op with up to five players. The game features a post-apocalyptic setting inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The world of RailGods of Hysterra was devastated by the arrival of the Great Old Ones—cosmic beings of unimaginable power. You take on the role of a Dreamer, someone who has awakened from the Dreamlands and is bound to a “RailGod.” And yes, a RailGod is exactly what it sounds like—a living, monstrous locomotive. With your RailGod, you travel from outpost to outpost, exploring the dark lands.
In the game, you (or your team) must search the environment for resources to craft weapons and tools and build your ultimate fortress on rails. You can also customize and upgrade your RailGod, making it even stronger. The combat system follows a traditional action RPG style, featuring both melee and ranged combat. Of course, there is also magic. In this game, sanity is a crucial element—if you go insane, you may, for example, lose the ability to recognize items in your inventory.
NEDRA
The final game I want to introduce today is NEDRA. NEDRA is a story-driven action-adventure with survival horror elements. You find yourself in a Soviet research station in Antarctica, playing as Arthur—the only survivor. Your mission is to uncover the station’s secrets.
The survival aspects in this game are particularly important. For example, you must lower Arthur’s body temperature near the hypothermia threshold to evade the Frostwalkers. However, if you push it too far, you will die. Resources like ammunition and supplies are scarce, so you must search carefully to survive. Your decisions throughout the game will affect the entire story, and there are multiple endings.
