People Can Fly cancels Square Enix’s Project Gemini shooter: Here’s Why

Project Gemini and Project Bifrost were two projects developed by the People Can Fly (PCF) team. A Polish development team founded in 2003 by former members of Metropolis Software, debuting in 2004 with the first Painkiller, receiving a strong initial success. The team has co-developed numerous titles over the years such as Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgement, and Fortnite, as well as their own Outriders.

With an acquisition by Epic Games in 2013, but then becoming independent again in 2015. The year 2025 marks a year full of projects for the team, such as the awaited Gears of War: E-Day expected to launch between 2025 and 2026. People Can Fly announces the cancellation of Project Gemini from Square Enix

With an unexpected announcement on June 1st, 2025, the Polish team from People Can Fly brings some sad news. In fact, with an announcement on various social channels, CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski informs us of some team news. Announcing the cancellation of two games: Project Gemini and Project Bifrost.

Gemini as a shooter announced in development since 2018 for Square Enix. While Bifrost was conceived as a VR experience by the team itself. Announcing that the lack of communication from SE led to the decision to cancel Gemini. With the consequent closure of Bifrost due to reduced funding. The decision is accompanied by a team restructuring and possible staff cuts.

People Can Fly: What’s the Situation with the Development Studio?

The team has certainly gone through a growth period but also restructuring over the last decade. With the acquisition of the team by Epic in 2012 (finalized in 2013), we saw the loss of some key members who went on to found The Astronauts. In 2015, the PCF team became independent. And from 2017 to 2021 a major growth with acquisitions of various studios in the USA and Canada.

Starting from just 40 members in 2015 up to nearly 500. However, in 2024 a reduction of about 150 positions occurred, following the ongoing market recession continuing into 2025. Leading to the recent cancellation news of the 2 projects. Although it seems that at least for now Gears of War: E-Day and Lost Rift remain intact, except for a potential development delay. With Lost Rift launching in Early Access on Steam with a demo on June 6th, 2025, during the Steam Next Fest.

In Conclusion

A sad piece of news regarding the cancellation, particularly of Project Gemini by Square Enix. But also a response to a gaming market where bigger studios are struggling to handle all the acquisitions from recent years. Not to mention the ever-increasing costs of projects that do not necessarily reflect their cost.

The People Can Fly team will therefore undergo a strong restructuring to focus more balanced on their most important projects. With Gears of War: E-Day and Lost Rift. While the hopes of seeing a Bulletstorm 2 or Outriders 2 are fading even further. What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments!
