The Origins of Stardew Valley – How a Hobby Project Made History
Eric Barone, better known as ConcernedApe, originally started Stardew Valley as a purely personal learning project to improve his programming skills. Eric drew inspiration primarily from Harvest Moon, but also from titles such as Minecraft, Terraria, and SimCity. He was a huge Harvest Moon fan, and with his game, Eric wanted to keep the features he loved from Harvest Moon while improving those that bothered him.
Barone began nearly five years of development in 2012, working almost daily for 10–12 hours on his game – seven days a week. And he truly did everything himself: the programming (initially in C# with XNA, later migrating to MonoGame), the pixel art with Paint.NET, music and sound with Reason Studios, as well as the entire game design.
Then the solo project Stardew Valley was released on February 26, 2016, exclusively for Windows on Steam and GOG. Within just a few weeks, Stardew Valley sold over 425,000 copies, and after two months, it surpassed 1 million copies sold. At that time, this was an incredible success for a pure indie game.
After the PC release was such a huge success, the game was ported to other platforms. This project was overseen by Chucklefish:
- Linux & macOS in June 2016
- PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in December 2016
- Nintendo Switch in October 2017
- iOS in October 2018 and Android in March 2019
Through this staggered release, Stardew Valley continually reached new target audiences over the years, making the game popular on all platforms.
Life on the Farm – More Than Just Planting Carrots
Let’s talk a bit about the gameplay of Stardew Valley. The game begins on a run-down little farm that you have to gradually cultivate. You take care of everything a farm needs: preparing the soil, planting crops, waiting through harvest cycles, and even raising animals. There are chickens, cows, goats, and other livestock that produce eggs, milk, and more.
There is also a mine for you to explore, spanning over 120 floors where you can find ores, gems, and plenty of enemies. With these ores, you can craft better tools for the farm, and enemies drop better weapons. The ores can also be used to make sprinklers to water your fields automatically and much more.
Stardew Valley also gives you plenty of opportunities to be socially active. There are 30 villagers to whom you can give gifts and talk. This builds heart levels with the villagers, revealing more about their backstories over time. If you build enough hearts, you can even get married, expand your house, and have up to two children.
The game offers a moral choice early on: whether to renovate the Community Center by collecting various items or to support JojaMart (a supermarket). The Community Center gives you a “narrative-driven experience”, while JojaStock lets you simply pay money to speed things up. In the end, you get almost the same benefits.
The game puts no pressure on you; except for a few optional tasks, there are no time limits. While it features a day-night cycle, there is no fixed end date, allowing you to play for as long as you want. This creates a relaxing, meditative atmosphere.
Pelican Town and Its Residents – The Heart of the Game
Your farm is located right next to Pelican Town. This village is home to 30 unique NPCs, 12 of whom you can even marry. Each has their own daily routine, likes and dislikes, and individual backstories. Gus runs the Stardrop Saloon, Evelyn is a baker and Alex’s grandmother. Everyone plays their own role in this charming village.
You can build hearts with all characters. With the 12 marriage candidates (six men, six women), this heart system allows for deep relationships. You can give gifts, experience events, celebrate anniversaries, and even have a wedding. With your partner, you can even have children. Stardew Valley is also fully LGBTQ+ friendly, meaning you can marry anyone regardless of your own gender. If you are a same-sex couple, you have the option to adopt a child instead of having one naturally. Special attention goes to Leah, whose ex-relationship is portrayed differently depending on the player’s gender.
Every year, various seasonal festivals are celebrated. All NPCs have special dialogues and activities during these festivals. There are also events where you can earn items or learn more about individual characters. These festivals are entirely optional, so you don’t have to participate if you simply want to enjoy your peaceful life on the farm.
From Solo Adventure to Multiplayer and Mods
When Stardew Valley launched in February 2016, it was an exclusive single-player experience. Everything was designed for solo play. But fans wanted to play together with their friends, so in April 2018 a Windows multiplayer beta was released, followed by the official multiplayer mode with version 1.3 on August 1, 2018. In multiplayer, up to four players can run a farm together, and it even supports crossplay between Steam and GOG. On December 12, 2018, the multiplayer update also arrived for the Nintendo Switch.
The Stardew Valley modding community is also very active. The largest fan mod is Stardew Valley Expanded (SVE). This mod adds 28 new NPCs, 58 new locations, and 278 new events and much more to the game. It was created by FlashShifter, who was even hired by ConcernedApe to work on the official 1.6 update. Of course, there are also many other small and fun mods.
Stardew Valley Free Updates – A Developer Who Never Stops
Over the years, Stardew Valley has consistently received major free updates that have expanded the game even further. No matter how big the update was, everything was free and there were no microtransactions. Every new piece of content and every world improvement came from personal dedication and not from monetization motives.
The last two major updates were Version 1.5 and 1.6. Version 1.5 introduced a new tropical island, Ginger Island, into the game. You can reach it after repairing Willy’s boat. There you will find exotic fruits such as bananas, mangoes, pineapples, and taro. In addition, there are new fish species, fossils, and a constantly changing volcano dungeon with 10 levels. On top of that, there are three new secondary NPCs as well as the story NPC Leo with his own questline.
Version 1.6 was a bit smaller in comparison. It was released in March 2024 for PC and in November for all consoles. This version added a new farm type, new vegetables, new festivals, and 33 quality of life improvements. Additionally, multiplayer was expanded to up to eight players.
Thanks to all of this, Stardew Valley became the second most popular game on Steam with a positive rating of 97.66%. There is only one game rated higher, and that is Portal 2 with 97.72%. However, just a few weeks ago, Stardew Valley briefly held the number 1 spot, and with more updates, it might stay there permanently.
Haunted Chocolatier – Looking into the Future
Haunted Chocolatier is the next project by Eric Barone. He is once again developing it entirely alone, and it is expected to be a single-player game “for now”. Eric has been working on it since around 2020, but the first announcement came in October 2021, including a gameplay trailer and an official website. However, there is still no release date.
In Haunted Chocolatier, you run a chocolate factory in a haunted castle. You have to gather ingredients, make chocolate, and manage your own boutique. As in the previous game, there are townsfolk you can interact with, but also ghosts. You can also freely design your shop. The world, according to ConcernedApe, is “bigger than that of Stardew Valley”. Despite the darker themes, the atmosphere is intended to remain life-affirming and inspiring.
The game has a greater focus on action elements, such as combat with weapons and shields, yet it is still a life simulation with social interactions, romance, and town gameplay. As in Stardew Valley, you can build relationships with other characters. Barone emphasizes that this game is not just a repeat of the farming game in a different setting, but will feature new mechanics.
Conclusion – Stardew Valley Is a Modern Gaming Fairy Tale
Stardew Valley is much more than just a farming game. It is a symbol of indie games, representing creative freedom, passion, and the impact of a dedicated community. Eric Barone created a one-man project that has inspired and connected millions of players. The continuous free updates and strong mod support, as well as the introduction of multiplayer, show how Stardew Valley has grown over the years without losing its soul. With Haunted Chocolatier, the next passion project is already on the horizon, once again proving that even a single developer can enrich the gaming world. Stardew Valley remains a timeless example that big visions can also emerge from small beginnings.
