Pixel Sundays – Arc Raiders: Between Hope and Ruin

In our Pixel Sundays article today, we are covering the currently most popular extraction shooter, which isn’t even that old yet. Of course, we are talking about Arc Raiders from Embark Studios, which was released at the end of October 2025. The game is a third-person PvPvE extraction shooter released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. It was developed by former DICE/Battlefield veterans.

Summary

The game was originally announced as a co-op PvE title, but this plan changed during development. In Arc Raiders, you take on the role of a Raider from an underground city called Speranza to gather resources and loot on the surface, which is dominated by hostile machines. Every mission involves high risk, and if you die, you lose everything.

The Origins of Arc Raiders – A New Studio with a Clear Vision

Embark Studios was founded in 2018 in Stockholm. The studio primarily consists of former DICE developers who mainly worked on the Battlefield titles. Several employees were involved in Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield 1. From the beginning, the studio’s goal was to break away from the classic AAA structure while still creating a high-quality game. This resulted in several small, autonomous teams and iterative development.

Arc Raiders

Arc Raiders was the studio’s first project, and they wanted to use it to project their creative vision to the world. The first public presentation of the game took place at the Game Awards 2021. There, the original concept was shown: a pure co-op PvE game against overwhelming AI machines. Inspiration was drawn from classic sci-fi motifs, survival games, and co-op experiences. The machines were not meant to feel like normal enemies but rather like natural disasters. In the first trailers, you could clearly see how important teamplay was, how large the enemies were, and there was a cinema-worthy presentation.

However, during internal tests, the developers saw that a pure PvE structure would generate little tension in the long run and would not keep players engaged for long. Then Embark began experimenting with PvP elements. At that time, Escape from Tarkov was very popular, so the developers tried to incorporate the classic extraction shooter loop with risk and permanent fear of loss. And it worked well for the game. Although there is no real PvE mode, the matchmaking tries to put players who rarely shoot at others together in a lobby, but the fear is always there.

Arc Raiders

The developers switched to Unreal Engine 5 to better showcase large areas and machines. The technical focus was on physics-based destruction, sound design, and lighting. This was followed by long testing phases with closed and open playtests, which were very well received by players. All community feedback was incorporated into balancing and design decisions. The loot system, progression, and mission structure were revised several times, and after multiple delays, Arc Raiders was released on October 30, 2025. Embark always communicated delays openly and transparently, resulting in little frustration within the community. The goal was not a quick release, but a stable, long-term viable title. Arc Raiders was deliberately designed as a live-service foundation. Updates, new zones, and additional ARC types were planned from the start.

The World of Arc Raiders – Life Under the Rule of the ARC

Arc Raiders is set in the distant future, around the year 2180. The Earth’s surface is considered largely lost and extremely dangerous. The reason for the collapse is the appearance of the so-called ARC machines. These ARCs are autonomous, highly advanced combat machines of unknown origin. They control large parts of the surface and attack anything human. Accordingly, people live in underground shelters like the city of Speranza, a technical but cramped sanctuary. Speranza functions as a social meeting point, quest hub, and starting point for raids.

Arc Raiders

Naturally, there are expeditions to the surface, but these are risky yet essential for survival. Resources, technology, and food are scarce and fiercely contested. The game world tells its story mainly through its environment. On the surface, you see abandoned cities, decaying industrial plants, and overgrown ruins. Clues to former civilizations are found in buildings, objects, and landscapes; the lore itself is never fully explained, and you have to piece together the worldview yourself.

The ARCs feel less like classic enemies and more like forces of nature; they are constantly palpable, even if you don’t see them. Sounds, vibrations, and visual effects announce danger early. As a player, you must learn to read the world and assess dangers. Retreat is often wiser than confrontation. However, the ARCs are getting smarter and adapting. The atmosphere is deliberately quiet, melancholic, and oppressive; there is hardly any heroic music, instead offering a restrained sound design. Hope arises through small successes and a safe return.

Gameplay Philosophy – Risk Over Reward Spirals

Arc Raiders deliberately focuses on a slow, tension-driven game rhythm. The core of the game is, of course, the extraction loop: you choose your equipment, go to the surface, loot, and then head to an extraction point to return. But if you die, everything is gone, except for a few items that you can protect in safe slots. So there are always open missions with uncertain outcomes without a classic match system. Arc Raiders offers a certain type of matchmaking and tries to put PvP players and PvE players into a lobby together. However, it can always happen that even as a PvE player, you encounter combat-hungry enemies. The playtime per raid is limited; pressure builds with every minute.

Arc Raiders

Successes feel more intense because you can fail and lose everything at any time. The PvPvE structure also ensures permanent uncertainty, as the ARCs are so strong that they can kill you at any moment. The ARCs are AI-controlled and have learned over time. Player data is repeatedly analyzed to make ARCs stronger and smarter. But the greatest danger is often other players; they can be friendly or pose a threat. As a result, no encounter is predictable and is always associated with tension.

You can play the game in different ways, either quietly and carefully or simply by attacking. You can also communicate with other players via the built-in in-game voice chat, but they can always stab you in the back. Communication is more important than pure accuracy. You can play the game either solo or in 3-player squads. Recently, you can also play solo against squads if you feel extremely strong. Weapons and equipment are deliberately not overpowered, and you can win with any weapon. Ammunition, healing, and gadgets are also limited, making resource management a central part of every mission.

Arc Raiders

The game rewards attention and planning more than mindless charging. Progression is designed for the long term; you collect blueprints and continue to improve your base. New equipment is unlocked through quests and traders. There is no endless loot explosion, but rather controlled growth. Gameplay generates tension through fear of loss instead of extreme rewards.

Enemy Design – The ARC as a Force of Nature

Arc Raiders does not treat enemies as classic one-hit opponents. The ARC machines are a central part of the world and its threat. The enemies are massive, heavy, and technologically superior. Their presence creates constant psychological pressure. There are different ARC types, each with its own role. There are small, fast ARCs for area security. Medium ARCs with strong firepower and patrol behavior. And the large ARCs act like walking disasters, which are not easy to defeat but carry epic loot. Each machine must be approached and fought differently.

Arc Raiders

To defeat the ARCs, you must recognize their weaknesses and pay attention to timing. The environment must also be used to stand a chance. Cover, height differences, and escape routes are crucial. Sound design also plays a central role. Footsteps, engine noises, and warning signals announce danger early, and as a player, you must learn to recognize and assess this. Audio thus replaces classic UI warning systems, making it feel more realistic.

If you are too loud, it can attract additional enemies, and fights can quickly escalate and become uncontrollable. You must always make decisions despite the stress, and one mistake can be fatal. The enemy design supports the core message of the game: that humans do not dominate but are intruders. Survival is more important than winning the battle. Retreat is part of the gameplay and is not considered a failure.

The Future of Arc Raiders – Roadmap, Updates, and Long-Term Vision

Arc Raiders was designed from the beginning as a long-term live game. Accordingly, Embark Studios follows a clear roadmap strategy with regular content updates. The focus is on sustainable growth rather than a rapid flood of content. Planned content is shown transparently via dev updates and roadmaps, and community feedback is also incorporated into the updates. The updates bring new biomes to increase the variety of raids. New zones with their own structure are also planned for the future. Additionally, Embark Studios wants to expand enemy design by incorporating even more new ARC types with unique behavior patterns into the game.

Arc Raiders

The developers also want the ARCs to interact more with each other, making the game even more challenging. There is also planned to be dynamic escalation during longer missions. The gameplay loop is also to be continuously developed through new mission types and objectives within the raids. The long-term focus is on balance and fairness; furthermore, the developers are against time-limited content, so there is no pressure. Pay-to-win mechanics are not and will not be part of the game mechanics. The only things available are visual skins that can be purchased. Additionally, the game should remain accessible without losing depth. The goal is clear: the developers want Arc Raiders as a permanent, living ecosystem.

Conclusion – An Uncompromising Extraction Shooter with Its Own Identity

Arc Raiders impressively demonstrates how consistently a modern extraction shooter can be designed. Instead of quick rewards, the game focuses on tension, fear of loss, and atmosphere. The threatening world, the strong enemy design, and the clear gameplay philosophy mesh perfectly. With Arc Raiders, Embark Studios proves its courage for independence and lays a stable foundation for a long-term live-service experience that rewards patient and tactical players in particular.
