Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate (PBBGU) is the Remaster of Battle Grounds by 5pb. Games. Initially released in 2013 on Xbox 360 and later on PS Vita in 2014, followed by an upgraded version on PC and PS4 in 2015. Then, in 2017, the Overdrive version landed on Nintendo Switch.
Battle Grounds is a spin-off of the Phantom Breaker fighting game series. It offers a retro-pixel style with Chibi characters, adopting a Beat ‘Em Up formula instead of the traditional fighting game style.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate was originally set to launch on February 13, 2025, but a recent announcement on January 23, 2025, confirmed the delay. The Game Director, Masaki Sakari, shared the news.
The new release date is now April 17, 2025. The delay seems to be mainly due to implementing cross-play across platforms. PBBGU was initially planned to launch simultaneously on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC with cross-play support.

What Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate Offers
It’s definitely disappointing for fans, but the two-month delay means fully functional cross-play across platforms at launch. Here’s what PBBGU offers:
- Remastered Graphics: Fully remastered on Unreal Engine 5.
- New OST: An additional soundtrack by the band The Phantom Breakers, featuring the Seiyuu of Yuzuha, Mikoto, Maestra, Waka, and Itsuki.
- Co-op and VS Modes: Local co-op for up to 4 players, plus various online co-op and versus modes for up to 8 players, with cross-play support.
Fans will need to wait a little longer to enjoy this remaster, but it’s not the first time for them. Mark your calendars for Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate on April 17, 2025. Pricing is confirmed at $24.99 for the digital version, $39.99 for the standard physical edition, and $109.99 for the Ultimate Edition with a Mikoto figure. Meanwhile, you can try the 2015 version or the fighting game Omnia.
