Payday 2 is entering what the developers are calling its “Next Chapter” as the game’s development has officially been handed over by Starbreeze Studios to Sidetrack Games, the studio behind RAID: World War II and several Payday 2 DLCs.

After 12 years, Starbreeze believes it is in the best interest of the studio and its players to pass Payday 2 onto another developer while it focuses on the troubled Payday 3.
In an official announcement on Steam, Starbreeze shared that it is partnering with Sidetrack Games, which will now provide support for the PC version of Payday 2 through patches and updates.
Sidetrack Games Takes Over
Sidetrack Games, previously M.U.G. Team and Lion game Lion, is the new team supporting Payday 2 on PC going forward. The studio is known for its modding work on Payday 2 and its four-player shooter, RAID: World War II.
Instead of lingering on the transition, Starbreeze has announced that the talented team at Sidetrack Games has already started working on the game. Their first update will be released on October 23, aiming to enhance stability and improve the overall player experience.
Focusing on Payday 3
Starbreeze’s decision to pass Payday 2 responsibilities means the studio can now focus entirely on Payday 3, which still suffers from performance and stability issues two years after launch.
It’s not entirely surprising that Starbreeze wants to focus on Payday 3, as the game has never recovered from what many believed to be a poor launch across PC and consoles. The daily concurrent player peak of Payday 2 on Steam is almost 30,000. In comparison, the Payday 3 daily player count rests at around 800.
The Future of Payday
With Sidetrack Games now in control, Payday 2: The Next Chapter is an exciting time to experience the game for the first time or return to it to see what’s new.
As for Payday 3, Starbreeze’s shift signals the studio’s commitment to improving the game and meeting player expectations. You can be a part of it by comparing game key prices on our store pages. Click on the links below to steal these games at great prices.
