Bungie has announced an indefinite delay to its Marathon reboot due to fan feedback following its reveal and Alpha playtest. The live-service extraction shooter was due to launch on September 23, 2025. There is no new date set.

Marathon, the upcoming extraction shooter from legendary developer Bungie, has been delayed indefinitely due to player feedback from the game’s April reveal and recent Alpha playtest.
The delay means the first-person shooter will no longer release on September 23, 2025, with a new date to be set as Bungie looks to continue closed testing.

Why Was Marathon Delayed?
In a development update post on its official site, Bungie said it needs “more time” to craft a Marathon that “reflects” the “passion” of the fanbase following the game’s reveal and Alpha playtest.
The extra time, Bungie says, will allow the developer to create a unique game that features “survival under pressure, mystery and lore around every corner, raid-like endgame challenges, and Bungie’s genre-defining FPS combat.”
What’s Next For Marathon?
Instead of a September release, Bungie will now hold more closed testing and add more requested features to the game that fans have been asking for, before the developer updates fans on progress again this Fall.
Bungie’s focus will be on the following features:
- Upping the Survival Game
- More challenging and engaging AI encounters
- More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
- Making combat more tense and strategic
- Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
- Increased visual fidelity
- More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
- A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
- Adding more social experiences
- A better player experience for solo/duos
- Prox chat, so social stories can come to life
