Halo Campaign Evolved Local Co-op Requires PS Plus on PS5

Playing Halo Campaign Evolved couch co-op on PS5 surprisingly requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription and Microsoft account linking.

Halo Campaign Evolved Local Co-op
Key Takeaways
  • Subscription Paywall: According to official FAQs, local split-screen couch co-op on PlayStation 5 requires both players to have an active PlayStation Plus subscription.
  • Account Linking: Both local players on PS5 must also link their accounts to a unique Microsoft account to access the feature.
  • Platform Discrepancy: This paid online subscription requirement for local play is unique to the PS5 version, as Xbox Series X|S players do not need an active Game Pass subscription to play split-screen locally.

Halo Campaign Evolved is probably the most anticipated game release this month, especially as it marks the first time the franchise will ever be on PlayStation. And when news of couch co-op was confirmed, you can imagine how much excitement that brought. Sitting down with a friend and playing through Halo side by side is part of what made the series iconic in the first place.

Turns out though, for PlayStation 5 players, it’s not as straightforward as what most people would expect couch co-op to mean.

Halo Campaign Evolved Couch Co-op Catch

Well, no one had this on their Halo bingo card. Halo Campaign Evolved remake, check. Halo on PlayStation, check. Split-screen, check. Couch co-op, check. But if you’re on PlayStation, there’s a fine print.

Both players need an active PlayStation Plus subscription and both accounts have to be linked to a Microsoft account. The Microsoft account requirement isn’t surprising since previous exclusives have been doing that, so that part is pretty standard.

But a local couch co-op mode that requires a paid online gaming subscription? That is definitely not how things used to work. In fact, it is entirely contradictory to the whole point of playing locally. The information came out of the FAQs so the requirement is legitimate. Players are in disbelief and rightly so because how does a local feature need an online service requirement. Xbox players don’t need a Game Pass subscription to play locally, why should Playstation players have PS Plus?

With the game launching on July 28, 2026, there is still time for Hsalo Studios to clarify this. Many fans are holding out hope that this is just a wording error and that the game actually just requires a PSN account instead of a paid PS Plus subscription.

Requiring a standard PSN account would make complete sense, whereas blocking local multiplayer behind a paywall does not. Hopefully, we get some clear answers before launch day arrives.
