A turmoil is rising inside Ubisoft, with staff demanding CEO Yves Guillermot resignation

You know that feeling when you’re playing a co-op game, and the team coordination just falls apart? That’s exactly what it feels like looking at Ubisoft right now.

The situation isn’t just tense; it’s broken. We aren’t talking about a buggy launch or a delayed patch here. We are looking at a full-blown internal revolt that could reshape how (and if) our favorite franchises get made in the future.

When the Devs Say “Game Over”

It’s hard to get excited about the next Assassin’s Creed or Far Cry when the people building those worlds are openly saying the kitchen is on fire. Two union representatives from Solidaires Informatique, Marc Rutschlé and Chakib Mataoui, have dropped a bombshell interview that paints a grim picture of life inside the French giant.

The core message? Trust is gone, and they don’t believe it’s coming back as long as CEO Yves Guillemot is sitting in the big chair. This isn’t just about corporate drama; it impacts the games we play. The reps describe an atmosphere of “panic” and “anger” following a harsh Return-to-Office (RTO) mandate.

This rule forces staff back on-site five days a week. Imagine moving your life away from Paris for remote work, only to be told your paycheck won’t cover living costs near the studio anymore. That kind of stress kills creativity fast. As Rutschlé put it, there’s a feeling of impending “doom” internally. If the devs are doomed, what happens to the games?

UBI: The Creativity Crisis

Here is where it gets worrying for us gamers. You’ve probably noticed that some recent AAA titles feel a bit… safe. Formulaic.

According to what Mataoui has shared with Game Developer, that’s not an accident. He claims Guillemot has surrounded himself with “yes men“—people who won’t challenge bad ideas. He also pointed out the promotion of Guillemot’s son, Charlie, as a sign of nepotism that stifles fresh thinking.

If you just put your white male friends in [those jobs], then you don’t promote any diversity or get any new opinions or ideas,” Mataoui said.

Without new ideas, we get the same game re-skinned five times in a row. They argue that this lack of diversity and the lingering shadow of the 2020 harassment scandals have created an environment where creativity goes to die.

In Conclusion: The Push for a Total Reset

It’s tough to recommend pre-ordering anything from a publisher in this state. When the people making the magic are asking for the CEO to resign to “rebuild a minimum of trust,” you know the production pipeline is going to suffer.

The representatives are calling for strikes and demanding a total board reset. For now, enjoy the backlog of Ubisoft classics you already own.

Does internal studio drama stop you from buying a game, or is the final product all that matters to you?
