The Witcher: CD Projekt Red Plans to Launch All 3 Games in Ciri’s New Trilogy Within 6 Years

CD Projekt Red has reconfirmed its ambitious plan to release all three games in the next trilogy of The Witcher games, which will focus on Ciri, within six years.

The Witcher: CD Projekt Red Plans to Launch All 3 Games in Ciri’s New Trilogy Within 6 Years

The Witcher 4 is in full-scale production at CD Projekt Red, and now, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has told investors that the studio plans to “launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period.”

CDPR has not yet revealed when The Witcher 4 will launch, but Nowakoswki has told investors and fans that the game is “not launching in 2026.”

CD Projekt Red’s Six-Year Trilogy Strategy

While six years may seem like an unrealistic timeline for releasing a AAA trilogy, Nowakowski states that the upcoming trilogy “should be delivered in a shorter period of time” because CD Projekt Red has transitioned to Unreal Engine 5.

Nowakowski pointed out the studio’s tech demo at Unreal Fest, saying that CDPR has “been using UE5 for The Witcher 4 for almost four years” and that the team is “very happy” with what it’s achieved.

The groundwork the development team has already put in place will hopefully result in a short development cycle for The Witcher 5 and The Witcher 6.

Ciri Takes Center Stage

The new trilogy will focus on Ciri, stepping away from Geralt of Rivia for the first time, who still appears in a lesser role. With Ciri now the protagonist, the games will explore her choices following her transformation as a Witcher following the Trials of Grasses.

CDPR’s shift to Ciri will allow the franchise to explore new regions, characters, and delve more into Ciri’s unique abilities and magical powers as she wrestles with personal struggles and the desire to help people in need.

Tech Overhaul: The Power of Unreal Engine 5

Moving away from its proprietary in-house REDengine, CD Projekt Red has transitioned to UE5 in a bid to become a multi-production company, capable of leveraging Epic’s powerful engine, which is built for large-scale open-world games like the upcoming The Witcher 4.

By adopting Unreal Engine 5, CD Projekt Red can tap into a larger talent pool, as more developers are familiar with UE5 than with REDengine.

Additionally, Epic’s dedication to creating a robust and streamlined engine for the next generation of consoles and hardware, coupled with a comprehensive set of built-in tools, will help CD Projekt Red reduce development time.

The Road Ahead for CD Projekt Red and Ciri’s Trilogy

CD Projekt Red’s commitment to releasing the next trilogy of The Witcher games within six years of one another has generated significant excitement among fans.

Although this timeline might appear overly ambitious, CDPR aims to leverage the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 to create three AAA open-world games that are visually impressive and designed for the next generation of consoles and PCs.
