Microsoft’s Secret Fallout Project Reportedly Scrapped

The wasteland just got a little lonelier. While Fallout fans have spent years dreaming of a “New Vegas-style” spin-off from one of Microsoft’s many talented RPG studios, a new report suggests those dreams were just buried in a shallow grave. It seems the Vault door is closing on external developers.

For a brief moment after the massive success of Amazon Prime’s Fallout TV series, it felt like Microsoft was ready to open the floodgates.

However, industry veteran Jeff Gerstmann has dropped a Megaton-sized bombshell on his podcast, The Jeff Gerstmann Show, revealing that a secretly developed Fallout project will not “see the light of day.”

Why Microsoft Scrapped the “Secret” Fallout Project?

According to former GameStop journalist Gerstmann, Microsoft originally greenlit a Fallout project at a “Microsoft-owned studio” in an attempt to capitalize on the franchise’s massive surge in popularity.

While Gerstmann doesn’t expand on what the game was or where it sat in the franchise, it could be a remaster, as Microsoft is believed to be outsourcing its remakes, such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and an upcoming Fallout 3 remake to external studios.

By using external, Microsoft-owned studios for its remasters and remakes, it’s believed it will free up Bethesda Game Studios to work solely on new games like the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5.

The Fallout 3 Remaster: Hope in the Capital Wasteland?

It isn’t all bad news for those itching to step out of Vault 101. While the “new” secret project is dead, the long-rumored Fallout 3 Remaster is looking more real by the day.

Evidence is mounting thanks to a series of retail slip-ups. Recent McFarlane Toy leaks and older FTC documents point toward a potential 2026 release window.

As mentioned, this remaster is expected to be handled by external experts like Virtuos or Iron Galaxy. This allows Bethesda to keep the “main” entries in-house while letting partners polish the classics for modern hardware.

The Future of the Franchise

The current strategy seems to be: let the TV show and remasters handle the heavy lifting while the main studio focuses on one gargantuan project at a time. It’s a safe play, even if it feels like a missed opportunity for variety.

If you need a fix right now, your best bet is sticking with the classics. Fallout 4 recently received its “next-gen” update, making it the most stable way to explore the Commonwealth while we wait for the Capital Wasteland to get its glow-up.
