The Elder Scrolls 6: Latest Engine Overhaul and Technical Details Revealed

After years of silence, new reports suggest Bethesda is overhauling the Creation Engine 2 and integrating Unreal Engine technologies as it builds The Elder Scrolls 6 and its future RPGs.

The Elder Scrolls 6: Latest Engine Overhaul and Technical Details Revealed

The Elder Scrolls 6 may still be a long way from launch, but Bethesda is reportedly updating its Creation Engine while “leveraging aspects of Unreal Engine” as it revamps the engine.

According to Jez Corden of The Xbox Two podcast (thanks, Game Rant), the newly revamped engine will roll out first with Starfield, before shaping “how the next Fallout plays and how the next Elder Scrolls plays.”

How Bethesda is Upgrading The Elder Scrolls 6 Engine

Recent leaks and official updates from Todd Howard confirm that Bethesda has shifted the “majority of the studio” to The Elder Scrolls 6.

Bethesda’s goal appears to be to fix the technical issues that held previous titles back, such as poor performance, stutters, slow load times, and weak animations. This means moving beyond the limitations seen in Starfield to create a more seamless, reactive world.

Fans have long criticized the “Creation Engine” for its stiff animations and frequent loading screens. With the studio now fully focused on TES6, they are integrating massive upgrades to lighting, physics, and NPC behavior that aim to silence those critics once and for all.

TES6 Engine: The Technical Details

The engine powering TES6 is the Creation Engine 2. While it’s the same engine that powers Starfield, the Elder Scrolls 6 version is getting an upgrade from unlikely sources.

Rumors suggest Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Group and experts from the Gears of War developer The Coalition, including Kate Rayner, are assisting.

Key technical upgrades include:

  • Unreal-Inspired Systems: Integrating features similar to Unreal Engine’s “Lumen” for real-time global illumination.
  • Radiant AI 2.0: A massive overhaul to NPC schedules, allowing characters to react to world events and player choices with unprecedented logic.
  • The “Tree” Metric: Todd Howard recently confirmed TES6 “most definitely” has more trees than Skyrim, hinting at much denser, more complex environments.

These advancements likely focus on “permanency,” which is the engine’s ability to track thousands of individual items in the world without crashing, ensuring that when you drop a sword in a dungeon, it stays there until you return, a hallmark of the series that is being pushed to its logical limit.

Is The Elder Scrolls 6 Worth the Wait?

The wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 has been agonizing, but the significant advancements in technology that Bethesda is implementing suggest that the game will be able to support a decade’s worth of mods and community content. This could also shape the future of the company’s role-playing games.

What do you think will be the best feature of the revamped engine?
