- The title is scheduled to launch in Winter 2026 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox systems, and Nintendo Switch.
The Return of a Looking Glass Classic
Originally developed by Looking Glass Studios, the first entry in the Thief franchise was a pioneer in treating light and sound as primary gameplay mechanics. Instead of prioritizing direct combat, players must study patrol routes, stick to the shadows, and manage their noise levels.
Stephen Kick, CEO of Nightdive Studios, noted that the original title did not just introduce stealth mechanics, but actively defined them for the entire industry. The studio’s objective is to modernize the user experience without stripping away the intricate, unscripted nature of the AI.
Players will once again step into the boots of Garrett, an orphan raised by the secretive Keepers and trained as a Master Thief. The narrative navigates a complex web of deception, ancient orders, and environmental storytelling.
What Changes Are in the Thief Remaster?
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered introduces 4K resolution support at up to 120 frames per second, alongside updated textures and refined 3D models. It also adds modern quality-of-life features like a new weapon wheel, full controller support with gyro aiming, and a dedicated mission selector.
Nightdive is utilizing its proprietary KEX Engine to modernize the experience. The technical overhaul includes subtle geometry fixes to the original, maze-like level design and vastly improved cutscenes to enhance the storytelling.
PC players will also benefit from built-in support for custom community campaigns. This highly requested feature ensures seamless access to thousands of hours of user-generated content directly from the game’s menus.
When is the Release Date and What Platforms?
The highly anticipated Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will officially launch in Winter 2026 across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
The PC version will be distributed via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. The inclusion of both current and last-generation hardware ensures broad accessibility for fans. Furthermore, the explicit confirmation of the Nintendo Switch provides a portable option for the franchise’s return. With the official store pages already up for Wishlisting the title.

Preserving the Master Thief’s Arsenal
Garrett’s specialized toolkit remains entirely central to the moment-to-moment gameplay. Using water arrows to strategically douse torches, moss arrows to muffle footsteps on loud surfaces, and the iconic blackjack for non-lethal takedowns are all fully intact.
The release also bundles the highly regarded Thief Gold expansion. This definitive edition adds three massive, complex missions to the base game’s original twelve, alongside five new enemy types to navigate in the darkness.
Nightdive’s careful approach mirrors their well-received historical preservation on the System Shock franchise. By prioritizing the original atmosphere over aggressive graphical overhauls, the studio is honoring a vital piece of gaming history.
