The Day Before is Back - But Some Players Are Skeptical

Key Facts

  • The Day Before by Fntastic  will set to be released on December 07 2023

  • The team has secured the name, and is committed to work on the game, console version will be announced with the full release

With an unexpected twist on the 20 November (X) page of one infamous game studio, that was the talk in the past few years, had announced a release date for their game. It’s Fntastic with their The Day Before, the Survival MMO set in a post apocalyptic world, that garnered the attention of many players, but hopes and trust were shattered due to various bad pr choices, mostly boiling down to lying through their teeth.

The Day before name confirmed

First revealed back in 2021, The Day Before made the splash with interesting premises and promises, offering a post-apocalyptic experience with zombies in an open world map, resembling a lot The Division by Ubisoft. Originally supposed to come out in June 2022, the game was later postponed several times, each time facing new issues.

That combined with fake gameplay, created ad-hoc and marked as in-game footage caused backlash and overall distrust in Fntastic and the publisher Mytona. The last straw was the take down of the videos after the community found out that the developers didn’t secure the game’s name The Day Before, which should be in theory one of the first few thing to do before showing any “gameplay” trailer.

Well, this was finally addressed on November 1st on their Twitter page, confirming not just the ownership of the name, but also the release plan as Early Access, reinstatement of the Steam page, pricing and plans for the future.

The 1st November trailer

Alongside said confirmation, coming well over 5 months after basically radio-silence and such, the team at Fntastic released a trailer. Showcasing the title as a Survival MMO title with PvP integration set in the US East Coast after a deadly Pandemic, though the game will take place in New Fortune City with a scripted beginning, seeing us being rescued by the Woodberry Colony. Making it the safe-zone/starting area

Then the trailer shows the loot mechanic, as well as inventory system and a bit of PvP action. Finally showing missions, equipment and customization, as well as side activities, cars and even a whole ranch to build your home.

The community skepticism

Considering the track record of Fntastic, it’s no one’s surprise that the community feedback so far has been ranging from mild optimism, up to utter denial that the game is even real to this day. A thing that can’t be easily shrugged off as being petty, considering we’ve yet to see a real gameplay section with real in-game footage and not just content created ad-hoc.

Moreover the trailer which should have shown in a better light the commitment of the team, has its own shares of problems. From noticeable pre-rendered scenes, well a far cry from the absurdly detailed and obvious ones from before, absurdly minimal UI even for certain stuff just like house customization, stiff animations combined with smooth ones that question the usage of assets from the UE store. And the cherry on top is the usage of AI voice to narrate the showcase.
