Riot Is Ending Active Development on 2XKO
When 2XKO first arrived in early access on PC, it looked like a promising addition to the fighting game space. Riot set out to modernize the genre by pairing responsive netcode and duo play with a free-to-play live-service structure.
However, 2026 did not pan out as the studio hoped. While high-level tag enthusiasts and dedicated pockets of the community embraced the mechanics, the title failed to attract and retain enough players required to sustain ongoing production.
Even with major additions throughout the year like Akali, Senna, Thresh, and the PvE Climb mode, engagement remained largely flat, leading Riot to decide that continuing full-scale development was no longer viable.
The good news for current players is that 2XKO is not disappearing. Online servers will remain fully operational after 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and offline local play will carry on completely unaffected. Riot has stated that ample notice will be given if server plans ever change in the future.

Throughout the rest of this year, Riot is rolling out several player-friendly changes alongside the remainder of its planned content. Starting immediately, KO Point purchases are disabled and the studio is issuing full refunds to players for all money spent on or before August 20. PC refunds will be returned to the original payment method, while console purchases will be handled through PlayStation and Xbox. Although refunds will be made, Riot is letting players keep whatever cosmetics and content they already own.
Players can also still expect the two previously announced champions to arrive. Lux drops on September 8 in an update that also unlocks all champions for every player, uncaps earned Credits, adds 40-player private lobbies with voice chat, and introduces a $39.99 Ultimate Bundle containing nearly all available cosmetics. To preserve healthy matchmaking queues across a smaller player pool, ranked lobbies and battle passes are being retired in favor of skill-matched casual matchmaking.
Then in October, Patch 1.3.3 will introduce the game’s final champion, Samira. Her addition will mark the last major content release, and anyone who purchased the Ultimate Bundle will receive her cosmetics automatically. Riot plans to finish things off with a final bug-fixing patch in December, if needed.
On the tournament side, the official 2XKO Competitive Series will run through November with full prizing support, after which community organizers can continue hosting local and online tournaments under standard competition guidelines.
