The studio Amanita Design spent over 8 years crafting the game’s 3D environments from real, hand-painted cardboard.

This particularly meticulous and time-consuming work was recently highlighted in the documentary Constructing Phonopolis by director Aleš Brunclík.

What is the goal of Phonopolis and how does the gameplay unfold?

Phonopolis puts you in the role of Felix, an ordinary citizen trying to stop the “Absolute Tone”, an auditory threat deployed by the city’s Leader, after accidentally becoming the only one aware of the danger.

The gameplay relies on point-and-click exploration and puzzle-solving within interconnected and interactive 3D cardboard environments.

The title adopts a dystopian tone where every citizen executes orders robotically, drawing inspiration from literary classics such as George Orwell’s ‘1984’.

You will need to alter the city’s very architecture to progress, interacting with hidden mechanisms within the cardboard scenery in sometimes unexpected ways.

The experience is meant to be intellectual and narrative, focusing on puzzle-solving and allowing you to fully appreciate the artistic masterpiece you are playing. Its influences stem from various avant-garde art movements, all animated in stop-motion. Pure eye candy.

What are the PC system requirements for Phonopolis?
