Nintendo announces original Switch, Lite, and OLED models will be discontinued in Europe by mid-February 2027 due to new battery regulations.
- European Discontinuation: Nintendo will officially stop selling the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models in Europe by mid-February 2027.
- New Battery Regulations: The decision stems from upcoming EU laws requiring portable devices to feature user-replaceable batteries, making the decade-old hardware non-compliant.
- Switch 2 Focus: Software support will continue globally, and Nintendo is actively preparing revised hardware and accessories including the Switch 2 to comply with the new rules.
Nintendo has confirmed that the original Switch family will officially leave the European market by mid-February 2027. The decision comes as new European battery regulations require portable devices to feature user-replaceable batteries, making a hardware redesign necessary for the aging console. Instead of re-engineering the original Switch, Nintendo is shifting its full attention to the Switch 2 while continuing support for Switch games.
Nintendo’s Original Switch Models Sunsets in Europe by February 2027
Nintendo has officially confirmed that sales of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED models in European countries will end by mid-February 2027.
According to a post published on Nintendo’s support page, the three original Switch consoles will no longer be available on the Nintendo Store or supplied to retailers once the new European battery regulations officially take effect. The updated rules require devices to feature user-replaceable batteries, and rather than redesigning the decade-old hardware, Nintendo has decided to retire the original Switch lineup in the region.
Considering the company’s focus has shifted to the Switch 2, the decision makes sense. Re-engineering older hardware to comply with the new requirements would likely offer little long-term benefit when Nintendo is already investing in its current-gen platform.
Nintendo reassured players though that manufacturing and sale of the original Switch family will continue throughout this year. And since the end of sales only applies to Nintendo’s own distribution, some retailers may still have stock after February 2027. In regards to that, Nintendo recommends contacting retailers directly for availability closer to that time.
These are the hardware that will be phased out by mid-February 2027:
- Nintendo Switch (Original Model)
- Nintendo Switch Lite
- Nintendo Switch OLED Model
- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- NES Controller for Nintendo Switch
- Pokémon GO Plus +
- SEGA Mega Drive Control Pad for Nintendo Switch
- SNES Controller for Nintendo Switch
Even though the hardware has a clear expiration date in the region, Switch software will continue to be sold normally, with the massive game library projected to keep growing.
To clarify, this policy changes things only for European nations. The rest of the world is unaffected by these specific battery laws, meaning players in North America, Japan, and other regions can still buy the standard original Switch models exactly as they do now.
To stay fully compliant with the new rules, Nintendo is actively preparing hardware revisions for its active lineup. Devices and accessories sold in Europe will receive updated designs featuring user-replaceable batteries on a rolling basis. The rollout is scheduled to begin this summer and will continue into early 2027.
The specific hardware getting an update includes:
- Nintendo Switch 2
- Joy-Con pair
- Joy-Con (L) and Joy-Con (R)
- Joy-Con 2 pair
- Joy-Con 2 (L) and Joy-Con 2 (R)
- N64 Controller for Nintendo Switch
- GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch 2
