Honeycomb: The World Beyond launches today, September 8, 2026, at 6:00 PM CET (4:00 PM UTC) for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. The game is developed by Frozen Way and published by Snail Games USA. You assume the role of bioengineer Hennessy and travel to the alien planet Sota7. The goal of your expedition is to find a biological solution to Earth’s crisis. The game is not a classic combat-heavy survival title, focusing instead on exploration, base building, research, and cross-breeding alien plants and animals.

Key Takeaways
  • Honeycomb launches on September 8 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Bioengineering, exploration, and base building take precedence over combat.
  • The story lasts approximately 15 to 20 hours; co-op is not included at launch.

What is Honeycomb: The World Beyond?

At Honeycomb, players experience a sci-fi survival adventure on the uninhabited planet Sota7. The main character, Hennessy, works for the EON Corporation to gather insights that can help Earth. Sota7 consists of diverse biomes such as forests, jungles, open landscapes, caves, and volcanic regions. The flora and fauna on the planet are not simply collected; they must first be observed and scanned. Scanning reveals the traits, behaviors, and potential applications of each species.

This establishes a fundamental gameplay loop. You explore the planet and analyze plants and animals. Then, you gather resources to craft new equipment and expand your base and laboratory. Afterward, you conduct bioengineering experiments, such as cross-breeding plants, to find a cure for Earth. Your base serves simultaneously as your shelter, workshop, and research center.

Survival Without Violence – What Makes Honeycomb Special?

At Gamescom 2026, we conducted an interview with a team member from Honeycomb, where they stated that the game is designed to be significantly less stressful than many other survival titles. While hunger and thirst meters exist, they deplete quite slowly. According to Simon from the Gamescom interview, the hunger meter takes about 24 in-game hours and thirst about 16 hours to empty completely. Death is also not punished as harshly as in other survival games; you only lose a few items and respawn with the rest at your base. The interview described the game as a survival experience for those who do not normally play survival games.

Hennessy is a scientist rather than a soldier, meaning she cannot engage in combat and animals cannot be killed. When facing aggressive creatures, you must first flee or keep your distance. Later, you can deploy a stun weapon to temporarily incapacitate dangerous animals. Many of the animals can be befriended and even petted. Tension in the game arises more from unknown life forms and perilous expeditions than from violent combat.

The core mechanic of the game is bioengineering. You can combine plants using systems like allogamy and grafting. These practices allow you to merge different genetic traits into new plant varieties. The objective is to create a resilient plant capable of surviving even in Earth’s poisoned atmosphere. Animals can also be studied and bred: you discover their preferred food, bring male and female specimens together, and even produce hybrid forms. Specific cross-breeds yield materials required for advanced equipment and research.

Scope, Co-op, and Post-Launch Content

According to the interview, the main story is expected to last roughly 15 to 20 hours. However, those who wish to scan every species, conduct experiments, and build an extensive base can expect around 30 hours of gameplay. Once the story is completed, a permanent sandbox mode remains available. This allows you to continue exploring Sota7, cataloging missing species, cross-breeding plants and animals, or expanding and decorating your base.

Honeycomb is strictly a single-player experience. The current architecture of the game was built entirely for single-player. Consequently, according to the developers, implementing co-op would require at least six months of fundamental code work. The team wants to observe how the game is received after launch before making commitments. Therefore, co-op is not definitively ruled out, but it is not officially announced at this time either.

Further work on the game is planned for the first six months following release. Free content updates, new furniture and decorations, quality-of-life improvements, and the ability to pet all animals are on the roadmap. Additionally, player feedback will be incorporated where feasible for the team. Paid expansions depend on the success of the main game, according to our interview, and are not yet confirmed.

Conclusion – Who Is Honeycomb Suited For?

Honeycomb: The World Beyond distinguishes itself from many other survival games primarily through its tranquil approach. Instead of combat and permanent time pressure, the focus lies on exploring Sota7, developing your own research laboratory, and experimenting with flora and fauna. Bioengineering, in particular, provides variety, as new cross-breeds are not merely cosmetic but are essential for progression and crafting new equipment.

As a result, Honeycomb is primarily aimed at players who enjoy relaxed exploration, base building, and scientific experimentation. Those expecting intense combat or a shared co-op experience will likely find less appeal at launch. Ultimately, success will depend on whether the diverse biomes, species, and cross-breeding possibilities offer sufficient variety throughout the entire playthrough. This unusual concept undoubtedly makes Honeycomb one of the more intriguing survival releases of the year.
