Half-Life 3 is playable from beginning to end, according to a leaker, who says it could also be announced and released before the end of 2025. The latest claim comes after text referring to “HLX,” believed to be HL3, was spotted in code in a Deadlock update in February of this year.

According to a leaker, Valve has been testing Half-Life 3, with a build that is “playable, end-to-end.” Tyler McVicker addressed fans in a Q&A livestream on his YouTube channel, in which he dived into the game’s development.
McVicker also claims Valve could announce the game by Q3 2025 and release the long-awaited FPS sequel in Q4 2025. He continued to say that Valve is currently “optimizing” and “polishing” ahead of a potential announcement.
What We Know About the Leak
Rumors about Half-Life 3 have been circulating for years, and the highly anticipated game has become somewhat of a meme. Recently, however, there have been references to “HLX” in Valve’s Deadlock. McVicker has stated that Valve is so far along with HL3 that they are either “content-locked” or “mechanic-locked.”
Speaking on his YouTube channel in his Q&A, McVicker says the game is playable from beginning to end and that it is not procedurally generated, as some people think. To those doubting the claims, McVicker revealed he’s been “offered” HL3 by “trustworthy” people.
What Is the Half-Life 3 Story?
Half-Life 3 and many other Valve games have had a torrid time over the last two decades. Valve was reportedly working on HL3 before cancelling it around 2014. It was canceled a decade ago because it was built on the unfinished Source 2 engine, which may not have been up to the task of HL3, which was apparently procedurally generated.
During his livestream, McVicker doesn’t go into detail but reassures fans that the story is not procedurally generated. The game will likely continue the story from Half-Life 2, with Gabe Follower claiming in the video below that it will be the end of Gordon Freeman and a farewell to many developers.
Will We Finally See Half-Life 3?
It’s been nearly two decades since Half-Life 2: Episode 2, but in recent months, there have been reasons to be excited as everything points to Half-Life 3. In a New Year post on X, G-Man voice actor Mike Shapiro told fans to expect “unexpected surprises,” HLX was mentioned in Deadlock code, and now McVicker says the game is closing in on a 2025 launch.
While Valve is yet to announce it, and there has been no gameplay leaked online, everything hints at a possible reveal at the upcoming Gamescom or The Game Awards 2025.
Conclusion
Half-Life 3 could be closer than we think after a new leak suggests the game is playable and a launch could come by the end of 2025. What do you think about HL3 potentially releasing this year? Share your thoughts in the comments.
