When Is Final Fantasy XIV Releasing on Nintendo Switch 2?

Final Fantasy XIV officially launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, with pre-orders available now on the Nintendo eShop. The title operates on a separate monthly subscription—offering a 50 percent discount to existing platform subscribers—and does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

To ensure server stability during the initial launch phase, Square Enix is providing a one-month free subscription period for Switch 2 players. New and returning players can access the MMORPG through the Free Trial, Starter Edition, or Complete Edition directly on Nintendo’s hybrid hardware.

Evercold Expansion Details: Bastion Job and New Systems

Square Enix shared extended details regarding Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the game’s sixth major expansion scheduled for release in January 2027. Announced by Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida during Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, the expansion kicks off the Godless Realms Saga and moves the story into a dimension known as the Fourth.

The keynote unveiled the expansion’s main tank job: the Bastion. This frontline defender wields a pair of massive greatshields known as skyltborg to protect party members during high-level encounters.

Evercold alters traditional narrative progression by introducing selectable main scenario paths. Supported by an Auto Content Balancing feature, enemy levels and dungeon difficulty scale dynamically based on the order players choose to complete them.

Character customization receives significant updates, including a dedicated color picker, expanded facial feature adjustments, and Character Action Skins to alter default movement animations like Teleport and Warp.

High-Profile Crossovers: Final Fantasy VII Remake and Evangelion

The expansion features two major collaboration raids produced alongside prominent guest creators. Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi joined Yoshida to revealBeyond the Lifestream,” an eight-player raid series debuting in Patch 8.01.

The crossover raid features scenario co-writing by Motomu Toriyama, story supervision by Kazushige Nojima, and boss designs by Tetsuya Nomura. This series introduces a brand-new intermediate difficulty tier placed between Normal and Savage modes.

For 24-player alliance content, Square Enix is partnering with studio khara for the Evangelion crossoverGhosts of Desire.” Acclaimed animation director Mahiro Maeda (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, Mad Max: Fury Road) serves as guest artist and designer.

Ahead of the expansion, the Gold Saucer receives a new typing activity titled “Keybound Brawler” on October 28, 2026. Supporting up to four players, the minigame offers character glamour sets inspired by Barret and Tifa.

How Long Will PlayStation 4 Support Last for FFXIV?

PlayStation 4 support for Final Fantasy XIV will officially end after Patch 8.3, estimated to arrive in approximately two years. Square Enix confirmed the legacy hardware is approaching its physical capacity limits to support future client updates, though the Evercold expansion remains fully playable on PS4 at launch.

Players on legacy hardware will eventually need to transition to current-generation systems, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, or Nintendo Switch 2.

To improve duty matching across all regions, Patch 7.5x will expand matchmaking across physical data center clusters, launching first in Japan before rolling out to Europe and North America.
