EA Sports FC 27 Loses PEGI 3 Rating as Europe Cracks Down on Loot Boxes
Pan-European Game Information (PEGI), the European video game age rating board is now raising the minimum age for games featuring loot boxes to 16 starting this week, including for EA Sports FC 27, with the series previously featuring a PEGI rating of 3.
Key Takeaways
- PEGI has raised the age rating for EA Sports FC 27 to PEGI 16 due to paid random digital items in Ultimate Team.
- The regulatory update shifts age verification burdens to digital storefronts and physical retailers across Europe.
- The core simulation gameplay remains unchanged, but parental controls are now required for players under 16.
For over two decades, Electronic Arts’ flagship football franchise enjoyed universal access ratings, but the underlying mechanics of the Ultimate Team pack economy have prompted a strict regulatory reevaluation.
The Games Rating Authority enacted the EA Sports FC 27 PEGI 16 rating change specifically to restrict minors from purchasing paid random digital items without adult supervision.
As outlined by poicy manager Connor Hinde on his LinkedIn post, this landmark policy update fundamentally alters the retail landscape, shifting the burden of age verification directly onto physical retailers and digital storefronts across Europe.
Why Did EA Sports FC 27 Get a PEGI 16 Age Rating?
PEGI assigned EA Sports FC 27 a PEGI 16 rating because the title incorporates real-money randomized content mechanisms within its Ultimate Team mode.
European rating guidelines require any game featuring paid loot box architecture to carry a mandatory age threshold of at least 16 to protect younger players from simulated gambling habits.
The Pan-European Game Information board formalized these criteria following prolonged scrutiny from consumer protection agencies.
While on-pitch sports simulations qualify for universal access ratings, the presence of randomized player card packs purchased with real-world currency directly crosses the regulatory threshold.
The commercial change solely affects point-of-sale verification systems across European digital marketplaces and brick-and-mortar storefronts, restricting independent account access for minors.
Which Other Games Are Affected by the New PEGI Rules?
Multiple prominent live-service releases now face identical reclassifications under the updated European rating framework, altering age requirements across several genres.
The revised regulatory rubric applies universally to free-to-play gacha games, mobile digital board games, and premium sports releases that monetize randomized items.
Publishers operating within European territories must either modify digital store monetization systems or adopt the elevated age badge permanently.
What Does This Mean for the EA Sports FC Community?
The PEGI 16 decision requires parents to actively authorize purchases and oversee console parental control permissions for players under the age of 16.
The fundamental match engine, roster authenticity, and competitive tactical balance remain identical to previous entries in the franchise.
