Eternal Threads is a story-rich puzzle game with elements of time manipulation developed by Cosmonaut Studios, step into the shoes of an operative tasked with fixing the corruption in the timestream you have been sent to the North of England in May 2015, where six people died in a house fire. While you are not allowed to stop the fire itself, you must instead manipulate the choices of the housemates in the week leading up to it so that they all survive.

• Follow six narratives through multiple decisions across multiple timelines, and you can experience these in any way you choose. Concentrate on one particular character’s storyline at a time, following their choices throughout the week then go back to the start and follow another character.
• Not sure of what exactly happened? Changed a decision that you’re not sure you like the consequences off? You can just pop off along the timeline and change whatever you like, whenever, and as many times as you want.
• Set up a temporary base in the house, providing a unique perspective on events. When you look back through the timeline, past events play out in front of you in ghostly form. In addition, as you manipulate the past, the environment can be reset around you to match the changes taking place, some new objects will appear, others will move around the house and the contents of rooms can change substantially.

Whilst it can be appealing to nose around the lives of others, Eternal Threads’ cast are lacking in some believability. The writing is fine but the delivery varies in degrees of confidence. Confining the game to a single household should breed some intricate knowledge but the time manipulation removes any stakes from the equation. The butterfly effect of decisions can make things hard to decipher, especially if you’re trying to dig for further information. As it is, Eternal Threads is a good premise let down by poor execution.

Eternal Threads presents a unique story with some of the best writing and character development I’ve experienced this year. Though it’s a short and simple experience, I found myself glued to the screen to see what happens next. There isn’t much else for you to do in Eternal Threads, making it the definition of a walking simulator, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
