- Black Myth: Wukong has officially surpassed 30 million units sold globally, reaching the milestone faster than major hits like Elden Ring.
- Over half of the total sales were from international players, with the PC version on Steam acting as the primary revenue driver.
- Developer Game Science is currently shifting focus to a new project titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which will not be a direct sequel.
A Historic Milestone for Game Science
According to a recent report from the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, Black Myth: Wukong has officially surpassed 30 million copies sold worldwide. This milestone firmly establishes the action role-playing game as one of the fastest-selling releases in modern gaming history.
The data, detailed in a publication by the Xinhua News Agency Research Institute, highlights a meteoric rise. To contextualize this achievement, Elden Ring required over three years to reach the same 30 million threshold, while Cyberpunk 2077 took nearly five years to hit 35 million units.

How Did Black Myth: Wukong Achieve Global Success?
Black Myth: Wukong achieved global success through a simultaneous worldwide launch, extensive multilingual voice localization, and strategic regional pricing. These factors allowed the game to break regional barriers, resulting in over 15 million copies sold to international players outside of its domestic Chinese market.
Traditionally, overseas sales for Chinese single-player titles account for less than 30 percent of total revenue. Game Science shattered this ceiling, with international audiences making up more than half of the total player base.
The PC platform, specifically through Steam, served as the primary revenue driver for the title. The PlayStation 5 version also demonstrated exceptionally strong performance across Western markets, while the Xbox Series X and S versions provided a secondary boost following their launch a year later.
What is Next After Wukong? The Zhong Kui Project
Following an impressive critical reception and a Game of the Year victory at the 2024 Steam Awards, the development team is shifting focus toward the future. Tencent’s recent investment in a portion of Game Science further solidifies the studio’s financial and operational foundation.
The studio is currently developing Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new title announced during last year’s Gamescom. While the development team confirmed that the Monkey King’s westward journey is not definitively over, this new project will not operate as a direct sequel.
Game Science is currently defining the core mechanics and narrative elements that will separate Zhong Kui from its predecessor. Given the high production values expected from the studio, players should anticipate a lengthy development cycle before the next major release.

Impressive numbers, I knew the Chinese players had come out in full support for Black Myth Wukong but the sales on the rest of the world are huge too. The game is pretty good and has insane production values, hope Game Science uses this success to keep improving on their games to deliver even better adventures.
