Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the ninth and latest entry in the Ryu Ga Gotoku series, a well-known series developed by the Studiosharing the series name and published by Sega. Previously known outside of Japan as Yakuza, the series name has been translated more faithfully to its original title with the recent chapters.
Initially exclusive to Playstation, this series has received strong positive feedback, experiencing a steady annual increase in popularity since its arrival on Steam. This new chapter, in particular, has surpassed its predecessors in simultaneous player numbers, reaching a peak of 46,161 players on Steam over the weekend and still remains one of the most played games with an average well beyond 30,000 players. These figures far exceed those recorded in previous titles, with Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name peaking at 13,737 players and Yakuza: Like a Dragon at 9,535 players.
Being the direct sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Infinite Wealth offers turn-based JRPG combat, in contrast to the previous titles with a beat-em-up combo-based combat system. Although Infinite Wealth provides a good compromise between the two styles.
In terms of the story, for the first time, we have Ichiban Kasuga and the iconic Kazuma Kiryu as the dual protagonists of the title. The former is in search of his biological mother, while Kiryu is looking for Akane with the goal of defending her from the criminal gangs in the area. Infinite Wealth features the most iconic gameplay areas of the series, including Honolulu as a new main location. We will also see the return of many typical series features, such as numerous minigames, the return of other iconic characters to add to the team, as well as new ones.
In short, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has exceeded the rosiest expectations for the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio team, despite the disappointment of many in learning that the New Game+ requires the Master Vacation Bundle DLC, included in the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions. Currently, the game offers various DLCs, including the aforementioned one, to further enhance the gaming experience with new content. As for the next chapters, we still know nothing about Like a Dragon 9, although the success of Infinite Wealth suggests something that exceeds expectations.
