The satisfying crunch of plastic bricks meeting a well-timed counterattack brings a familiar rush. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is heavily channeling that fluid, Arkham-style combat.
It feels less like a simple puzzle solver and much more like a proper action brawler. But to make that combat heavy and impactful, the developers had to make a massive change.
Quality Over Quantity in Gotham
Past titles threw hundreds of characters at the screen, often resulting in endless, hollow reskins. This time, the launch roster is stripped down to just seven core heroes and allies.
Players get control of Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Talia Al Ghul, and Catwoman. The trade-off for this smaller count is a vastly upgraded skill system for each hero.
Instead of just swapping characters to break a specific colored wall, you’re actively building a loadout. Characters level up over time, opening up distinct abilities that completely change how they play.
Batman weaves his grapple and batarangs seamlessly into his street-level fistfights. Catwoman uses her whip for crowd control and can even summon stray cats with a laser pointer. You can even take direct control of those kittens to crawl through tight vents. They’re perfect for distracting oblivious Gotham City guards with a well-timed meow.

A Wardrobe Fit for a Billionaire
Trimming the playable roster doesn’t mean the traditional collect-a-thon is gone. The obsession has just shifted from unlocking random henchmen to building the ultimate superhero aesthetic.
The game features over 100 distinct suits to hunt down across the open world and story levels. The goal is to slowly fill up a massive, glorious display down in the Batcave.
Cinematic History in Plastic Form
TT Games is pulling references from the entire cinematic and comic history of the Caped Crusader. Finding these hidden suits is meant to be the main driver for fully exploring Gotham.
You can expect to unlock Adam West’s ’66 spandex right alongside Christian Bale’s tactical armor. Fans of Robert Pattinson’s gritty 2022 look or Michael Keaton’s classic ’89 rubber suit are also covered.
There are even heavy hints from the studio that the Snyderverse “Batfleck” suit will make an appearance. From the Rainbow Batman to the Animated Series, the fanservice is running on all cylinders.
Securing the Ultimate Batcave Experience
May 29th is shaping up to be a busy day for vigilantes on PC and consoles. Trading a bloated roster for a handful of highly polished, upgradeable heroes is a smart pivot for the franchise. It brings the focus back to tight, satisfying gameplay rather than mindless roster bloat.
Watching that massive Batcave slowly fill up with a century of comic history is exactly the kind of grind that keeps controllers in hands.
