The initial reveal of a new Pokémon generation always brings a specific kind of magic. Seeing fresh environments and unfamiliar creatures sparks that old desire to grab a Poké Ball and start exploring.
With Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves officially announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, that magic is back. GAME FREAK is trading the familiar terrain of Paldea for a beautiful archipelago defined by fierce winds and crashing tides. This isn’t just another region to map out. It looks like a living, breathing ecosystem where monsters genuinely interact with their lush surroundings.
A Desperately Needed Technical Evolution
If performance issues in Scarlet and Violet left you frustrated, the early footage of Winds and Waves offers a massive breath of fresh air. The visual upgrade is immediately obvious.
The water actually looks like water now. Instead of flat blue textures, the environments feature deep, transparent oceans with accurate reflections and dynamic lighting. The draw distance has improved dramatically, showcasing dense vegetation and dynamic clouds rolling across the sky.
The creature models have also received a massive overhaul. Rather than flat, smooth surfaces, Pokémon now feature rich textures that react naturally to the environment’s lighting, reminiscent of the polish seen in New Pokémon Snap.
The New Starters of Gen 10
Your journey kicks off with one of three brand-new first partner Pokémon, and the designs are already winning fans over. The Grass-type option is Browt, the Bean Chick Pokémon. Browt is full of energy, using the leaves on its head for photosynthesis. Standing 30cm tall and weighing 3.5kg, this lively but clumsy companion comes with the Overgrow ability.
If you prefer Fire-types, you’ll be drawn to Pombon. This 41cm tall Puppy Pokémon generates heat from a special organ inside its lungs. Weighing 6.7kg and sporting the Blaze ability, Pombon has a naive and incredibly friendly demeanor.
Finally, there’s Gecqua, the Water-type Water Gecko Pokémon. Gecqua is 30cm tall, weighs 4.3kg, and launches elastic water spheres straight from its tail. Equipped with the Torrent ability, Gecqua brings a highly intelligent and slightly smug personality to your team.

Familiar Faces and Surprising Additions
While the starters take center stage, a massive roster of returning favorites is already confirmed for the tropical setting. Players can expect to see aquatic staples like Krabby, Corsola, and Wailmer swimming off the coast. The skies and forests will feature Wingull, Taillow, Tropius, and Carnivine.
Other confirmed evolutionary lines include Oddish, Tangela, Ledyba, Slugma, Duskull, Mareanie, Sandygast, Tympole, Nymble, Sizzlipede, Lumineon, Frillish, Tynamo, and Slowpoke.
The game also introduces two bizarre new franchise mascots: Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. Exactly how these uniquely styled Pikachu fit into the story remains a mystery. On top of the expanding roster, these titles will finally add official support for Brazilian Portuguese, opening the adventure up to a massive community of eager fans.
