Yesterday brought a major announcement: the reveal of a brand new game called Varsapura. The game is currently being developed by HoYoverse, best known for titles like Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero. Their new project takes you into a modern metropolis influenced by supernatural forces. Expect intense combat, multiple playable characters, and even horror elements. HoYoVerse’s next game will be Varsapura. The title translates to “Rain City”, which fits the game’s atmosphere well. Varsapura is set in a modern city where supernatural powers are at work, blending urban environments with horror elements. To monitor these phenomena, an organization called the “Shadow Emergency Alliance” (SEAL) exists—and you’ll be part of it.

The Story of Varsapura

In the gameplay trailer—which we’ll get into in a moment—you see the main character, codenamed Hollowone, applying to join SEAL in order to seek revenge on a murderer. The story follows two narrative threads: personal revenge on one side and spectacular supernatural incidents on the other. You can make choices in dialogue, and your personal traits can influence the outcome of conversations. For example, you can try to intimidate or persuade others, similar to mechanics seen in many RPGs.

Varsapura Gameplay Overview

The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, giving it very high-quality visuals. The style leans toward realism but still maintains an anime aesthetic. Combat features a team of three characters, though you directly control only one at a time. With a single button press, you can switch characters, who will then jump into the fight in a flashy transition. Each character has basic attacks and abilities, and they fight with unique weapons like umbrellas, books, or a massive metal ball on a chain.

In addition to standard combat, there are also stealth mechanics that let you sneak up on enemies to gain an advantage. Outside of missions, there is an open world where you can even use a vehicle—one provided by SEAL. The world features dynamic weather as well. Opportunities and Challenges

HoYoVerse already has extensive experience with open-world anime games. However, this new blend of realism and the supernatural creates an interesting stylistic shift. It’s still unknown whether the game will be paid or funded through a gacha system, which not every player is fond of. After this lengthy 31-minute gameplay demo, expectations are naturally high—expectations the developers will need to meet at release.

For now, the only material available for Varsapura is this 31-minute gameplay demo. There’s still no official information about release date, platforms, or pricing.
